What do you use for acetone—nail polish remover or paint thinner or something else—are both these acetone?

The pure commercial kind.

Yes. You can find 100% acetone at hardware stores, such as Lowe's, Ace, or True Value. Avoid products that are labeled as nail polish removers as they can contain other chemicals that can damage coins.

Go to your local home center, in the paint section usually. Where they have all the paint thinners and stuff. You can purchase 1 quart and it is clearly marked Acetone. I have gotten sick from sniffing too much so consider a well vented area. And don't smoke near this stuff as it flames up worse than gasoline. It burns clear which means you don't see it but you certainly will feel it as it burns your room up.

There are rare instances of plastic coins and tokens being issued. I suppose that acetone would severely affect them.
Of course, which is why I was careful to say "It only affects organic material, not the metal." If you have a non-metal coin, this does not apply to you.

If you read the label on a can, jar or whatever the Acetone is in, it should say just Acetone. Not list any other additives.
And as a rule, test it for purity. By that I mean place a small amount on a clean, clear glass plate and allow to evaporate. If no residue, it is OK.

(Unless you are using acetone on red copper in bright sunlight. Do not do that.)

I've heard this before. And some time back I put several Copper coins in a jar and then in direct Sunlight. After about two weeks I noticed absolutely no change. I must have been using the wrong Sun.

It's safe to use. I've used it for awhile now, and I had no problems with it. Just make sure you use 100% pure Acetone and not nail polish remover.
Errers and Varietys.

No different than anything else in coins. There is no hard fast rule with conservation where if you do this it'll happen 100% of the time.

Just because aceton can change a coins color doesn't mean it will

Not really a problem for me, I do not take my coins outside much anyway.

I've been using acetone for a long time now and I haven't had any adverse effects. If your coin has grime on it, it will in time lead to porosity and environmental damage. I have coins that I have had over 50 years that will testify to that conclusion.

One word of caution though. If you do use Acetone for coins, do not mix several different coins in the same batch of Acetone. And possible dirt or grime on one coin could end up on the others as the Acetone evaporates. I did that once with a batch of coins all in the same jar with Acetone. When the coins were removed, some really looked messed up. Always do one coin at a time and discard used Acetone.
