That is very interesting. Of course I will have to check mine when I get a chance.

Is the partial N raised or incuse into the coin?

It seems to be incuse. It doesn't seem very "deep" like a normal strike would be. It's almost a "ghost" of a strike if that makes sense. The strike through debris seems to make sense.

Just checked mine and no noticeable marks on any of the coins. Curious what others more knowledgeable have to say.

I'll look at mine later when I get the chance. If indeed the areas are incuse vs raised, it was not an issue with the die. Could have been some foreign matter on the die or more likely, post-strike damage.

Looking at it, it looks like something was laying on the planchet when it was struck...and then fell off after being struck.

Can this end up bringing any extra value to his set?

It really depends on what it is

I think it could possibly be a "dropped letter" error, as XOG described

I think a dropped letter error is the only solution that I can come up with...what should I do? Leave it or send it off for grading/authentication? Not sure if the premium is worth the return...although it does seem like a pretty rare error.

If it is a dropped letter error, it is probably worth slabbing. I think that there would be several people interested in it if you ever decided to put it up for sale, I know I certainly would be.

Here is an article by Ken Potter that mentions dropped letter coins

Send it in for grading. Let's see what the experts, er, "professionals", say.

I'm thinking that it's Post Strike Damage most likely.

I don't think its post strike damage, there are no other marks on the coin to suggest that it was damaged and these enhanced uncirculated coins were handled similarly to how proofs are handled. The fact that the incuse markings look exactly like the letter N and are right below that letter N strongly evidences that it is a dropped letter error.
