AU-55 Details, cleaned and chopmarked. Probably straight graded by PCGS as AU-55 though.

Quote: I'm thinking (but not 100% sure) all these chopmark coins in slabs should say detailed. Quote: But don't they mention the chopmarks/damage too ? Chop marks can straight grade with PCGS but it will be mentioned on the label.

Quote: Good question, I have never paid attention.
This particular example would not seem a logical submission candidate. It seems to me the vast majority of these I've seen on ebay in slabs are cleaned and detailed.

She graded PCGS Genuine, Cleaned -AU Detail, Chop Mark.
I love the Chop Marks and trying to find out what they mean so I can see aprox. where it was at the time in 1878. This was the last year of business strikes too.

Definitely the Chop Marks add character and are proof they performed the service they were destined for.

I don't know much about these chop mark coins. Couldn't these be easily counterfeit or fake chop marks? Seems like they could easily be replicated or made. On the other hand, I ask myself why would someone want to intentionally damage/deface these coins?

I'm not a big fan of chop marked Trade dollars, but that one has more character and appeal than most.

Quote: Couldn't these be easily counterfeit or fake chop marks? I wouldn't say easily but it's happened before. For Trade dollars it's kind of counter productive though, there's enough already and a decent number of people dislike them shrinking the potential market. The ones that get the most scrutiny are when you see them on unusual things like a Seated dollar or Half

Quote:So when you see a slabbed Trade dollar with chop marks and it's labeled "Details", is that because of the chop marks? Most will be for something else like cleaned. There was a time though where they would get details graded just for having the chop marks but that would be an issue with old holders. https://www.PCGS.com/news/PCGS-Now-...rade-Dollars that's their short announcement in 2003. They'll note it if they think the chops are fake, just like they note artificial wear on low balls when they don't like the look. I believe NGC details all chop marks

Trade dollars with Chop Marks are the only coins I collect that are "defaced". As they were meant only for Eastern Asia, I think it's a lot of fun to decipher the Chops to try and see where its been. Especially from 140 years ago when travel took forever. They are absolutely great conversation starters as well. And I only collect the ones where the chops don't obliterate Liberty's face or out stretched arm, or the eagles head. As well, it must be graded already, thereby alleviating the worrying about it being a counterfeit.
