...And to think I thought I was the only one...thank God for you guys being here. Now, I have a group of people to call family. My wife thinks I'm weird for spending money on coins and doesn't understand why I keep them rather than spend them. Unfortunately, my local shop doesn't do discount bins but the local flea markets have tons. I'm actually going to a coin estate sale this Saturday and hope for the best.
~Mike~
P.S. The key is to give her some money for herself. That'll keep her busy for awhile....

I think we are all becoming masters at making sure we can get our coins when we need them, I just wish my husband would stop asking me why I think it makes sense to spend so much money on money. lol

Well, I'm only 19, so no marriages yet, but my girlfriend of two and a half years had sort of a similar reaction when I first started collecting (about six months ago). She tried to rationalize that since I spent money on coins she should be allowed to spend money on purses/sunglasses/shoes. Good thing we got that little misconception sorted out or she'd be destitute by now.
But even though she doesn't take part in my hobby she does share my interest in it from time to time, even though its obviously faked sometimes. Shes smitten with all the foriegn coins with animals on them that I have. She also enjoys my proof coins because....well....who doesn't like proof coins?
Now that words gotten around to my myriad of friends that I'm into collecting they've shared some interest as well. When friends come over to my house they'll sometimes ask to see my coin collection. Or I'll have a friend find a foriegn coin in circulation and they'll give them to me. My friends went crazy when they saw my 2000 fifty cent pieces I had gotten for roll searching.

I am puzzled, You found a 1955 Doubled-Die Lincoln and say its no big deal? Unless I am misinterpreting the 1955/55.

It's interesting to see how the "significant other" reacts to coin purchasing.....my girlfriend is not a collector...... for now...she tolerates what I do, I think, because we aren't married yet...(maybe in a year or so ).......and then it'll be "our money" and I'm concerned about my coin purchasing future at that point forward !...

The answer to this is simple. I found out a while back, 41 years, all I had to do was make sure my wife had enough money and she made sure I received everything I wanted. Coins, hunting & fishing trips, just whatever.

Quote: until I noticed the 1955/5. I know this is not a huge find, but was nice to see in the set and like a bonus coin for me. I believe he has the Die Deterioration Doubling, or "poor man's double die", not an actual 1955 doubled-die cent.

So we all have that argument with the misses. She uses my coin purchases as a rationalization for her clothing purchases. I've tried to explain to her how my purchases are such a better use of our money. I explain that the longer I hold my purchases, the more they're worth, the longer she holds her purchases, the less they're worth. Some women just don't respond to rational arguments!!
When she comes in the door from shopping, she asks me to tell her how her clothing looks, all I can see is the $20 that could have (should have!) been used to buy coins.

"Poor man's" DD or not, sounds like a nice find to me. And I don't know if I will ever understand the women in our lives (for men), I personally don't own any clothes that I think that is as beautiful as some coins I own.

Yes, the 1955 is a poor mans double die, if it was an actual double die I think the set would have been a little more expensive.
I did get a chance to get a quick look at the sets and noticed that the few I opened at first were the worse ones in the group. Most of these are very high grade and I was shocked to see how many were actually proofs. Looking through them I could tell the original owner was a nickel collector because those have all been replaced with lower grades (G-EF) where the rest are high grade MS63+. The other part that was nice is the early sets and the 40% silver half pieces.
Now to the wife...we have been married for 10 years and after a lot of trial and error the first few years we finally figured out how to break the spending money down. We each get so much per month ($20-50 depending on how good a month it is) to spend on things we want. So as of the last 2 years my money has mostly gone to coin collecting and I have a strict 'allowance' of $20 for that so I spent that at the end of last month and then spent another $50 yesterday. She actually is really understanding and knows it makes me happy so as long as we can still pay the bills she does not complain.

This is hilarious because I have also been placed on a monthly allowance for my coin collecting and my wife thinks I am goofy for things like dropping $4 on a nickel, even though it's a Liberty V in F condition. Those sorts of things just go over her head. To her it's still paying $4 for a nickel and it sounds like a bad business transaction. I am glad to see that many of you are in the same boat with me!

I sometimes find it amazing the mind set of some people. I have friends that cant understand how I can "waste" money on coins, and they will be telling me this while standing in line at the local store to spend $5, $6, or $7 on a pack of cigarettes. The way I feel, is that it is all in how you look at it, and what makes you happy. If spending up to $10 per day on a pack of cigarettes, or spending every night in the bar, and not remembering where your money went makes you happy, then more power to you. Me, it makes me happy to buy coins, and see them whenever I want.

coinmap I am glad someone else had a view I had not thought about as well and that is where we spend our money on everything else. If I cut out buying a snack in the morning and lunch each day I could have a ton more money to spend on other things.
