Is this Bowers guy in any way related to the auction house Bowers and Morena (spelling?)?

Yes. It is the same Bowers but the business was sold so he is not there anymore. He was involved in American Numismatic Rarities and is now at Stacks since the merger of these 2 companies.

IMO, Q. David Bowers is currently one of the best numismatic authors and that book is an excellent read

I have the book, enjoyed it and learned a lot. There's good history there but also a lot of solid information about many of the American series. Bowers obviously is one of the big names in the field, which is no guarantee that he can write, but I found his writing scholarly yet readable. Well worth picking up.

I actually just picked that book up yesterday. They had two copies of it at Half Price Books for $9.98 apiece. I started reading it last night and I can tell this will probably be the most informative and entertaining book on coins that I've come across yet!

I have the Bowers book and it is a good read. I could never afford to collect the coins he recommends. He is a big fan of uncirculated in the higher grades. Great for investment purposes, perhaps, but not for me and I expect the average collector. I think it is a big deal if I spend more than 2 hundred for a single coin.
I am trying to pull the trigger for a seated liberty liberty dollar(over 3 hundred). Sorry for a bit OT.

Yeah, something tells me that you wouldn't catch Bowers rummaging through the junk bins at coin shows.

Thanks, okie! it's a rainy day here so I'll have to hit the book store. You think it will be on the shelf in mainstream book stores?

It should be on the shelves. I think it was published in 2005 or 6. I got it at the library, but it would be worth owning.

I purcahased this about 2 months ago at Borders. I agree it is a good read and gives very good information and advice for anyone looking to buy investment grade coins. One bit of advice in the book I liked a lot: "study the different prices levels of a given issue, and if a small jump in grade, such as from MS-64 to MS-65, is accompanied by a huge jump in value, buy the lower grade." There is almost always a spot in any issue where you see this big jump. Over the long term it is this level that appreciates at the most consistent level.
