Yep, story of my life - Go perch fishing and only catch sheephead!
I know how you feel. I go bassing and catch channel cats, go catfishing and catch carp. You can't win.

Tell me anything you see in this coin that creates value. The obverse is discolored with evident environmental damage from K10 to K4, no hope of restoration at all. Reverse rim chink. It deserved to be in a Mason jar.

Honestly, where is the value here?

IMHO I think even if it isn't intrinsically valuable it's still a great find for a garage sale. Value and beauty are in the eye of the cent holder. I may pay $10 because that's all I feel it's worth, while someone who's sentimintally attached to it may pay $100. That's supply and demand

Throw it back in a mason jar? Really? That coin would look great in my old beat-up 1909-1940 Whitman folder.

With the absence of the die markers, it's a well struck business strike. Not the matte proof unfortunately.

I never mentioned value - I can give a crap about money. Money makes people turn weird. I'm an old country boy that to me life means happiness to have a good woman, a good truck, and a good dog!
Ya know whats funny? I brought out my 1857 FE's to day for a pic and I found out I actually had 2 1955 Doubled dies. I thought I only had one. HA! Actually does pay to check into your coin collection every now and then!!
Tom might flip about this one!! I was amazed these were in pretty good condition!

Sorry folks, just call 'em like I see 'em. Great coin for discussion, just commenting on value, no offense to anyone. Jeesh this is a tough audience.

Hah - I sell nothing. Wow, I put 3 wheat coins in my wifes hand and she said 4 dollars? She tripped out when I told her that's about 4 Thousand!

Mark, I know how you feel. I used to have a bunch of my old Pontiac parts at my Mom's house. She graciously let me do it but would mumble about my rusty junk. One day I decided I didn't need all the spares and told Mom I was going to sell it. She thought I MIGHT get $100. After seeing buyer after buyer putting Hundred dollar bills in my hand all weekend and the asking me how much I made.....$5600...she just shook her head. As for you cent everyone pretty much nailed it. But the satisfaction of finding something like this in the wild is the real value! I have a 1903S morgan I got in change 15 years ago, and I"ll never sell it. Even though I am a coin dealer!
Rest in Peace

Hey Mark , I'm a little late to the party but not to worry . There will be no bashing on your 1916 find from me today . The coin has a very good strike , too bad it was grossly stained and beat to crap being in that jar . I don't think I would have thought it was a Matte Proof but hey I'm sure you were excited about it and wanting to show and tell of your great find .
What were you thinking
Oh yeah , I forgot; No Roasting

Centsie, jm - thanks.

T-BOP, all I did was post it with a simple question, never mentioned selling, never mentioned anything about price. Funny how some people only worry about money as in values of coins instead of the thrill of a find! I collect for fun and what I want - I don't sell and I can give a crap if I over paid on something or got a great deal. Although getting a deal every now and then is gratifying!
