I used proofs in mine whenever I could for the modern coins. I think they look fine with the others. I went for VF or better on the older types, but I am moving along with upgrading to AU, although I probably won't complete that for all of the more expensive types. I have also recently begin thinking about switching out some types for others that are more interesting, but of a similiar grade. For instance I just switched out a 1817 Coronet Large Cent in VF for a Coronet LC 1820/19 in VF. Wanted to have an overdate somewhere in the set. Still having fun.

what happens when/if you decide to upgrade?

I made up my mind when I started my 7070 album that I would put AU or better problem free coins in it and once a coin was in there it will always be there, no upgrading so I do put tape over my labels for a laminated look but if that wasn't my plan, I would just have stuck them on the back cover with glue or what ever and if I upgraded it, it should be rather easy to remove and replace with the upgrade label of any other coin that took its place or another's place down the road

I love putting proofs in. I have proof Bicentennials, Ike, Kennedy, modern quarters/dimes/nickels/cents, etc.

I also "cheated" and put a proof Andrew Jackson in place of the Sacagawea, because they're basically the same and I don't like the Sacagawea dollar.

I have one proof in mine, the 1982-S Washington Commemorative. I bought both 1982 Washington Commemorative Half Dollars (uncirculated and proof) from the mint in 1982. I decided they belonged in the 7070 together.

I'm working on a 7070 too and I'm not going to include ay proofs. My set is EF/AU so the most expensive coins will be EF. I've bought lot of slabbed coins for the set but haven't cracked them out yet. And I'm not going to till I have all the coins I need for the album. That way if a nicer example comes along I can trade easily.

The question I have for everyone on this is: Do you collect common dates or hard to get dates? It seems that if you are doing common dates then it would not be that bad for about half of the collection but if you are going for hard to find dates, this set could be next to impossible to do.

Personally, I am doing the nicest coin I can find for the best price, so some are proofs that I have got for almost nothing. My older coins are lower to mid range in grade and I love to see the difference in color and grade as I flip through the book. I know that I will never be able to buy higher grades of a lot of the 19th century coins and have no problem with that, so buying proofs of the more recent coins works just fine for me.

I've a question.... Isn't a Proof coin a "type" of coin

Proof is a type of minting process. For the purpose of a type set, the types are denoted by a major metal or design change only which is why proofs are strictly optional. In my 7070, all of the moderns are proofs. I would never place a really valuable proof in the album though- my two most expensive ones would be a Silver Eagle(purchased at the Denver Mint) and a Lewis and Clark commem $1(Christmas present from wife).

Good luck on your 7070 set. I try and obtain the nicest XF/AU coins I can for the more difficult early coins (Bust, Seated, 20crnt etc). I figure I can always go back and fill in the common stuff in high grade. The hunt is the fun part. I have no proof coins in my set and have none broken out of slabs.

Okay, so I received my album today (I ended up buying a very lightly used one, since my coin collecting is still on a tight budget), and to my (slight) disappointment, it was an old style one...page 4 only had holes for the Bicentennials and a 1979 SBA. So I'm guessing it's a 1979 Dansco? The titles of all the pages are a bit different than the current danscos (the title of the coin is above the hole, and the year(s) are below). Anyone have an extra current page 4?

ANYWAYS, I'm happy to have a 7070, and I'll upgrade to a newer version one soon...but I was so happy to start filling the holes

Now I must make a trip to the coin store this week to start shopping in earnest

And yeah, for the older/harder to find stuff, I'm gonna try and go for XF/AU if it is within my budget...we'll see tho...

It appears that you have the same 7070 that I have, but my "Bicentennials + SBA" is page five? I got mine in 1993.

Here is a link to the updated replacement page at Wizard Coin Supply. They call it page six, but as I said in my book it is page five.

I have wanted to start a 7070 since I first heard of them on here, but didn't see the point when all I had to put in it was modern 'junk'. Now that I have aquired some older examples I only need to order the dern thing, but I keep spending the $20 on coins instead .

I didn't order my album until I had acquired all the coins. Putting them all in at once was a dramatic feeling of accomplishment.

jbuck - thanks for the link! I'll have to order my updated page...and yeah, I think mine is page 5 too...just had a late-night typo last night =)

okie-colin - I totally can see what your talking about...having put in the meager amount of coins that I have for my fledgling type set, it seems very daunting to have so many holes (an not so much coin $$$)...ah well, I knew this would be a long-term on going portion of my collection.
