I'm not allowed mine?
My point is calling toned coins damaged is a slippery slope.

I agree the coins are not damaged, at least not as defined as a TPG. Toning is a debatable subject what constitutes artificial toning or attractive toning is a very subjective determination. These coins aren't blowtorched or dipped in AT solution so they seem natural enough to me.

Like I said in another topic, toning is damage from a technical point of view. However, we usually avoid calling it damage because of the negative connotations. Of course, this has never stopped those who dislike toning from saying it.

What a beauty! Quote: I store my proof and mint sets in a garage in Central Florida. Due to the high humidity and temperatures, coins stored in this manner tone much faster than coins stored at room temperature. I think most of us would agree those are unacceptable storage conditions for a coin collection. Quote: toning is damage from a technical point of view. I agree. I happen to really like those post-Mint chemical reactions when the results appeal to my eye. However, the overwhelming majority of this seller's "Florida Toned" coins are downright ugly in my opinion.

With toned coins the source of the toning is irrelevant. People have driven themselves insane for decades debating it. The only thing that makes a coin is market acceptability. A coin either is or it isn't. It's really that simple. Clearly, this coin is NOT market acceptable.

Quote: Clearly, this coin is NOT market acceptable. I agree, but, to be clear, the image I posted above is a different "Florida Toned" coin being offered by the same seller. The coin originally linked to by the OP is this (not much better):

apparently the beauty of toned coins, whether they be natural or unnatural, is in the eye of the beholder. for me, a (mostly) symmetrical & colorful tone on a decent old coin is what works. the things that ebay seller is displaying aren't very attractive to me, i'd never buy any coin with a toning like what he's attempting to sell. first of all, I despise those Sacagawea dollar coins, toned or not i'd never pay more than a dollar for one. it's just not an attractive coin to me, so my opinion is biased right out the gate. second, the toning on those dollar coins looks more like rust, like keith12 said, or an odd bit of corrosion. I'm not saying it's corroded, it just looks like it, and that look isn't attractive (to me). it looks like it was involved in an accident of some sort that led to it's current look. I don't know anyone who collects coins that 'appear to be damaged'. toning is technically 'damage', but some tone-damaged coins have a really attractive look to them (and some don't), but again it's in the eye of the beholder. i have just a couple toners. I also have a few coins that are unattractively spotted with toning, but I've never gone out of my way to purchase anything like what that seller is offering and probably never will. Florida Toned... lol.... when I read those words my mind interprets them as a warning...
