Well played @mark1959.

@IV, first welcome to CCF. Second, perhaps you could explain in a little more detail what you are seeing with this coin? I agree that it isn't a grease-filled die for sure (although I think that this is the most likely explanation). For example, what do you mean by "all those little spots that look like nicks or scratches are all little letters"? Are you saying that someone scraped off the original inscriptions without damaging the copper plating and then added new, but smaller letters like the microprint on dollar bills?

To CCF IgnorantVirtuoso! It's nice to see new members join CCF everyday!

Commander, very nice Greaser find! That one is severe enough to be worth keeping. It should go in a 2x2. I think that it would carry a small premium as well.

Sometimes you do have to just laugh, and I'm not sure what the reference to Kentucky is, but judging by the reactions to it I can infer its clearly not a good thing. Either way, the coin was stuck in the machine and struck repeatedly, dozens of times or more. Each time slowly spreading the design out. What I meant by tiny little letters is that each time it was struck those letters from say liberty, or in god we trust, had to go somewhere. They eventually become smashed together and look like a coin that was grinded alomg concrete. If commander would simply look at the coin close enough I bet there is lettering all around the edge that is much less distorted. When he responds we can have a normal discussion about the coin if you want to act like adults and not middle school girls who are trying to fit in with the cool kids.

If it helps try looking around the word liberty. I bet the letter y and r are prominent over the others. Around the date look at the edge for a bunch of 3's.

Just as soon as this football game(Chiefs) of over I'm going to the scope again with this coin. I'll let you know the finding.

IgnorantVirtuoso - Not sure what you're referring to, this coin appears the way it does due to a Grease Filled Die.

Commander - Nice find, definitely a Greaser worth saving in a 2x2.

Thank you all for your input. I will certainly get it in a 2x2. Under the scope at 150 power I think it's a 1966 coin. I found another at the end of the box I will post.

It's a nice Greaser & nothing more. It also can't be 1966, otherwise it would be copper, a different design, relief & would weigh more at 3.11grams. From your pics ,
It's 1997. Enjoy ;)

1996. That would be a copper plated zinc planchet. So if there was any machine damage it would be exposing the zinc core which your coin is not. Multiple strikings would have split the copper plating. So as most everybody stated - a nice example of a Greaser.

Is this a grease situation or something else?

Current images suggests Grease Filled Die, pending the weight is normal. Rims seem broad and prominent in this case.

If weight is normal, any grease or debris would seem to have been contained within the opposing dies. Thanks, Doug.
