"Gradeflation", anyone? If ANACS gave it a 50 way back when, then there must be some fairly obvious signs of circulation in hand, such as breaks in luster or a minor rub, which just don't show up well in a photo. There is little likelihood in my opinion of a coin once graded 50, even in the good ol' days of conservative grading, achieving 60 or better today, no matter how much smoke and how many mirrors are employed. On the other hand, 55 or 58 is perhaps a reasonable expectation. My only concern would be that minor defects such as an old cleaning, which may have been tolerated with a slight downgrade years ago, could result in a details grade today.

mdpmedia - Are the marks on Liberty's arm you show close up bagmarks or clash marks they don't appear to be wear. I too think of grade inflation this coin shows it well. Today's standards I see lower end MS slabbed Seated coinage regularly at bigger coin shows that look every bit as this one does (from static photos anyways).

In the early 2000's this would've been a perfect crackout coin for a PCGS upgrade (heck might still do it today, but is it worth the fees?).

For me personally I'd rather have a choice high end AU coin than a baggy plain looking low end mint state coin in my own collection. AU can definitely be more pleasing than an uncirculated coin, but will never have the extra price of the uncirculated coin, a win in mind. rpdmedia, your example is a nice coin for this kind of discussion, thanks for sharing.

These marks are not clash marks and appear too deep on the arm to be bag marks. I have seen other graded MS no-detail coins with somewhat similar deformations rising to MS-60 which will be my bet.

The view of the close-up of the arm here is 98% the same compared to what I see in hand.

IMO since the nine opinions shown on this grading thread contain no mention of a 'details' hit, I will gamble and crack it. What do I have to lose since I paid $ 60 for this coin dealing with a fast taking auctioneer that failed to do his pre-show homework and started the bid way too low.

Unless I hear something to the contrary this submission will be just like any other raw coin sent to PCGS. But in this instance I will not have to pay the 1% final value fee that a crossover commands...

Since this '...crack it or cross it...' thread below ties directly into what we are discussing here I thought I would connect it for all interested parties:

For what you paid vs. what you got, I'd say this was a huge big time rip! Got to be at least a $500 coin.

I am about to send in some crossovers myself...I would not crack 'em out and I would recommend the same to anyone...if it does not cross....it stays in the old small white and desirable ANACS holder

Here's the PCGS slab I just received today;:

What feature(s) in these PCGS-taken pictures is preventing this coin from a 55 or higher classification? I'm still confused.

53 is generous, tons of bag marks, hits and abrasions all over.

looks like I was pretty close. to me the surfaces look rubbed of most of its luster and the PCGS image shows borderline corrosion. lots of abrasions in the surfaces.

Not too bad considering what you paid for it vs. this chart;

I'd say you done good!

I forgot to ask but would I use the $ 800 figure shown on this chart x 1% to come up with the $ 8 that I'll owe PCGS for the xover fee?

Possibly. A lot of times they'll go with the value you placed on it for the submission but other times they'll use the guide if it's way off. They generally don't try to break your back with the 1 percent unless you clearly are trying to avoid fees

The value is more for the insurance level they send the coin back to you in the mail.
