I would look for Barber dime patterns using google, I would not dismiss the possibility, though it is a long shot. |

This very well could be an error coin. They have been found years afterward with many rare errors. I would ask a few well known coin collectors about it and see what they think first. If they think it may actually be real I would send it off to one of the coin grading companies to see what they thing. Hello everyone, After a little more research I did find out some information stating that Charkes Barber had made some Dime, Quarter and half Dollar coins in 1891. According to the 2008 Red Book, pg 345, only two are known both at the Smithsonian. I would send that to NGC as soon as possible. Worse case it is a fake, if not.... Regards, Stan |

It is definitely a fake. There are only two known specimens of the 1891 pattern and they are both in the Smithsonian. Now there could be a slight chance that a third specimen did leave the mint, but a comparison of the reverse of the coin in question with the real pattern definitely shows that they don't match. First the coin in question and then the real pattern  Easiest place to see the difference is in the shape of the right hand loop of the bow tying the wreath, the shape of the ara of the field between that bow and the leaves to their immediate right and the fact that the coin in question has a leaf coming from the wreath to the middle of the E in ONE. The genuine pattern does not have such a leaf. There are several other differences as well but those should be enough to prove it a fake. Actually pretty much the entire right hand side of the wreath is wrong. (It can't be an altered later date because the pattern and the regular issues have the same reverse, and does the Seated dime from 1860 on.) Don't waste your money sending off to one of the grading services. Or if you WANT to throw your money away, keep the coin, send me the thirty dollars and I'll be happy to tell you again that it's a fake. :) Edited by Conder101

You can speculate all you want as to it being a "pattern" or "error", but that does not get around the simple fact that the design is wrong. There is still a slight possibility that it could be a contemporary counterfeit but no one will be able to tell from those pictures and a grading service will not tell you either- they will just deem it to be non-authentic with nothing more said(and take your money in the process). On the other hand as a contemporary counterfeit it DOES have a collector value to those of us who are interested in such things. More value than a genuine common Barber dime in that condition would have. |

Thanks for all the replies... I dont know if this makes a difference but the coin is slightly bent on the lower right side, looking from the back. But a nice coin for conversation, yes.
