Could the dies be misaligned, and that is edge of the collar, with a Rim Fin? I don't know enough about how these early coins were struck, to know if this is legit or not. The obverse certainly looks convincing...

I don't know it this is significant but the diagonal reeding is evident all the way around. It isn't as sharp where the lip rises but it's there.
But something interesting...this is the 10-string harp variety. According to CoinsandCanada, it's supposed to weigh 4.5 grams whereas the 8-string weighs 5 grams. This one weighs 4.7 grams so it's Above it supposed weight strangely enough.

SPP-Ottawa - A ' Rim Fin' as you put it, is another name for the raised lip ?

missing area is too uniform to be indent strike I think. Dies appear aligned. The tapering is exactly how a clip should look. hmmmmm

Is it possible this is struck over an indent strike?

@Alan - I don't know much about the strike process, can you elaborate...

The portion of the coin was either sunken in before it was struck, or a piece of crescent moon shaped metal was sitting on the edge when it was struck. What's strangest about this one, never seen an indent strike where the indented portion is backwards. How would a coin lay over top and make the indent? Would have to have been a crescent moon shaped piece of metal?

As you said, is it possible the coin was not sitting flat when struck...that's what I'm thinking.

Before offering an opinion, I must ask you if the unstruck crescent is recessed relative to the die-struck surface. It looks like that might be the case, but it could also be a visual illusion.

@mikediamond - ok, I just reread your question and checked the photos and understand what you are asking. I would have to dig it out and will do so and get back to you soon on that. Thanks in advance for your help, appreciated.
