I am the first to state that I don't know enough about coins yet. That is my reason for joining the forum. The ping test maybe unreliable but, this coin did not even ping; it just made a dull thud. So, to be on the safe side I am sending it back at my cost.

Quote:
Are they counterfeited for collectors? Not likely. They are common and inexpensive - not likely candidates for counterfeiting.

you are kidding right?

But the ASE? REALLY?

there are hundreds of thousands of them for sale , at any given time.

No, I am no kidding.... if you cannot determine a genuine ASE then you should not be buying them.

I don't know what you expect to hear when you do your "ping" test, but if you don't have a known ASE to compare to then you can not do the ring test effectively. Your coin's probably real.

I think I found proof. The first pictures is the reverse of my coin. The second pictures is ASE picture from the US Mint.

If you look at the U in UNITED STATES and the O in ONE DOLLAR they are not correct.

What do you think?

WRONG. You need to do your own research. You seem to be convinced it is fake, so just sent it back.

One way to learn is trial and error. Until I become an expert, I will keep questioning.

Look up 2008 reverse of 2007 Silver Eagle....early ASE's had a different reverse from the present ones. the "tweeners" provided a profitable event for collectors.

I am in the "it's genuine" crowd but you probably should send it back 'cuz you won't be comfortable.

Just keep the comments here in mind and don't call the seller our for selling fakes...

For those that thought the coin was real, you are correct. I took the coin to my coin shop. They tested it using a precious metals verifier. The coin tested at .999 oz. I have learned that the magnet test, weight, and tissue test are viable tests. The ping test is not worth a crap. Most of all, if you are still unsure take it to your local coin shop. Also, those on this form have a pretty good grasp of coins. I asked the shop owner about the verifier. He said it has saved him thousands of dollar in fake purchases of all types of coins which including the ASE.

Some good comments have been made; they are all worthy of at least some consideration.

I an definitely not an expert with these, nevertheless, the OP has a sharp eye, and deserves some comments on the observations he has made, from opinions that are better than mine, with ASE's.

My opinion, for what it is worth, is that the coin should be checked out of the holder. Check for ping tone and weight.
Having it in this particular holder or not, will not affect it's value.

I was lucky. In fact, I got several things from this seller that no one bid on.
