I know exactly what they look like. I'm still not so sure. My white line is the rim, (admittedly, it could have been straighter, but it's in the right place) What is above it is the effect of Die Deterioration.

The distance from the rim to the numerals still looks normal to me. You don't go from the deteriorated part to the numeral. That's not how these work. Can you take a picture of the entire obverse so I can see the whole thing.

The only way to be sure of which you have is to get one of each, so you are positive which is which. Then take pictures of both, and then make an overlay. There is where you "separate the men from the boys". In other words, the overlay will show which is wide, and which is narrow.

I see what FIR is talking about now and I agree that seeing the whole obverse would give better perspective. The we can take LD's advice and compare it with other photos of the two varieties.

Ok gang! Here are pictures of the Obverse and close-up pictures of the date near the rim and in particular the first number 1 and the last number 9

Based on these pictures I did a comparison to the layout of the regular coin (last 2 Pics)

I printed out pics of both and lined them up, and from what I can determine they are different, and even though the Die Deterioration may have thrown things out of whack, the coin is indeed a WideRim/ Near Date 1979P SBA as the date is still closer to the rim than a normal date is.

Opinions still welcomed please!

It does seem to me that it is closer to the rim than the narrow rim would be, so I still think its a wide rim. However, I await FIR's opinion!

Yeah, you guys saw what I meant. That's why I wanted to see the whole obverse. It is also why I said I wasn't sure.

The perspective is better in a shot of the obverse.

This is a Wide Rim (Near date) coin.

Also a minor thing that is , at least to me, more visible in the obverse shot is the shape of the tip , of the tail, of the first 9. On theWide Rim coins, the tip of the tail is more rounded while on the normal coins, it is more blunt.

Thanks for the extra work with the pictures:-),
Bill

Thank you to all for helping to get this coin properly attributed!

Thanks Bill for going the extra mile to make sure it really was a 79 Wide Rim(Near Date) coin

It's been said "the coin is indeed a WideRim/ Near Date 1979P SBA as the date is still closer to the rim than a normal date is."
Actually the date is in the same place as the far date, the rim is just wider.

The coin was struck from a LDS die. Thus leaving the heavy die flow and loss of the details along the wide rim. That is what raised a question in my mind, but agree. It is a wide rim/near date.

Here is some more info on the coin- ENJOY!

1979-P Wide and Narrow Border

NARROW BORDER VARIETY

WIDE BORDER VARIETY

1979-P Narrow and Wide Border: This highly collectible variety is noted by the distance between the rim and peripheral design elements, most prominently between the date and rim. Because of this, this variety is sometimes refered to as "Far Date" and "Near Date". This is actually inaccurate as the date was not moved, but instead the border was widened. They are also often refered to as "Narrow Rim" and "Wide Rim". The Mint began striking the 1979-P SBA Dollars with the "narrow border". Late in 1979 the border was widened to give the coin a more aesthetic appearance. The "narrow border" variety is found on all 1979 dollars from all of the mints. The 1979 "wide border" variety can only be found on the "P" mint issues. The "wide border" variety was used for the remainder of the series.

The mint did not keep accurate records on how many of each variety were struck. According to information provided by George E. Hunter, the Assistant Director of Technology for the U.S. Mint at the time, there were 643 "wide border" dies used at the Philadelphia Mint in 1979. It is estimated that there are approximately 250,000 strikes per die. Using this estimate the Mint would have produced approximately 160,750,000 1979-P "Wide Border" Susan B. Anthony dollars, or nearly 45% of all 1979-P Anthony Dollars minted. However, since the Mint has released their entire production of Anthony Dollars, it does not appear that the "Wide Border" variety makes up nearly half of the 1979-P production. While not rare, or even scarce, the "Wide Border" variety is somewhat elusive, especially in high grades (Mint State 66 and above). We may never know exactly how many were struck.

Ah, touche!

But, the date is closer to the rim, at least from the rim's point of view.

jbuck,

I had a feeling the "RIM" would view this differently from the "DATE'S point of view!
