After looking at that date again, are you sure this is not an altered 1898? Can you provide a close up of the date? Here is what the date on a PCGS coin looks like.  |

No grade, it's an altered date as IGE pointed out. The top section of the 3 should be noticeably smaller than the bottom. I hope you can slap a round trip ticket on this one...

 with Dave700x - Over dipped and not real, made to fool a buyer, typical stuff that was coming out of China a couple of years ago. Sorry it is an 1898 and I can tell you now where I got it and it will make a little sense why I missed the date. I first of all did not look as close at the date as I should have, but I got it from Provident metals as a XF (random date) I have it sitting in my 1898 column of my collection, so I did know it was 98 not 93 but that is what I said to myself as I opened the package ... 93 so I guess it stuck in my mind.... anyway got it for $27 I am pretty happy with what I got....

With the damage on the date it is just a bullion coin now. It's a AU coin and probably looks better in hand than these photos show.

yeah the date is fine... more the picture than anything. just a bit of tarnish.... I do that all the time in my old age see 3's for 8's and 8's for 3's

Me too then, and looking on an older iPhone small screen, I really thought it was a 93 with the Chinese dies. I see it now on the big 34" screen at home, I'd say possibly a low end MS but it looks like some wear on the high points so AU55.
