Hi Chris. What you're saying makes sense, but there's no similar indication of this anywhere else just the rim. It seems like there would be evidence of this somewhere else if that were the case wouldn't you think?

Someone tried to match the T's in TRUST and hoped that no one would catch that the letters were backwards. As said above, it's a vise or squeeze job. If it were a true double strike the letters wouldn't be reversed.

Awesome info everybody! Many thanks, but I'm still a little confused. Coop, are you saying that this is a rim restricted second strike or device duplication?

confused also, because I thought that if this was a rim restricted second strike the letters would be raised not incused as you say they are, can someone clarify?

After reading the link coop posted my guess is rim-restricted design duplication. I don't see design elements on the reverse rim

If the second set of letters were normal, it would have been a Rim-restricted Second Strike. As these letters are incuse and reversed, it's just damage from contact with another cent. It may have been a vise job, but there's no way to tell if it was accidental or intentional damage.

I see this coin as a spender, not an error.

I just know what Mike put on his web site. I don't think he means a doubled strike, but perhaps like Machine Doubling the die bump the rim area and left the tops of the letters in that location. (the only area that the die touched the rim)
