@CM, first welcome to CCF. Your pics are fine and you chose the correct section of the forum--well done!

I vote that it is a cast counterfeit / replica coin.

Hi Paul

The OP coin is an obvious fake. There are many levels of fakes some are very obvious made to deceit the non experts and some are better fakes made to deceit dealers and more experienced collectors. I am not 100% sure whether the one you posted is also a fake or not but just wanted to bring this up here that not all fakes are as obvious as the OP coin. The art of detecting fakes IMHO is when someone can detect the advanced and well made fakes , not the ones like OP coin

I'm no expert on these coins....But buying from a reputable dealer helps!

The example I posted is from vcoins from a reputable dealer...The size , weight, style, flow lines and overall look of the coin seems good to me!........Why do you have any doubt?....Paul

Paul, I am not sure because I don't have the coin at hand to examine it under magnification but the surface from images seems porous specially where legends meet the fields and around the warship area. Again that could just be corrosion or cast. In general I personally avoid coins like this with porous surfaces

Does anyone know a physical place or person I can go to for them to take a look at it? I know most people believe it's fake but I'd just like to make sure in person

Canadian_Mat it is an obvious fake. Don't need to waste your time. There are venues like David Sear or NGC but I would use them for more deceiving fakes not the one you posted

You could bring it to your local coin shop and get their opinion. If so, please follow up with us on this thread--it is always nice to see others' opinions.

If your local coin shop doesn't ordinarily buy and sell ancient coins, they may not know enough to be able to identify fake ancients.

You could wait until the next coin show rolls into your neighbourhood; at least one of the dealers at a coin show ought to know enough about ancients to be able to offer an opinion on your coin.

You could also try your local coin club. One or more of their members might be collectors of ancients. If not, then they would probably know a local dealer who does know about ancients, which they could direct you towards.
