I agree T-Bop, if this coin doesn't go 68 or better I'll be surprised, I've never seen striking this good, or a coin anywhere near this nice on any business strike buffalo, I studied it under the scope for a long time.

I think this is just a really fresh die smalldawg, here's a side by side.

hopefully we see an assessment from fortcollins on this one. its a beauty. I cant see it less than MS68 unless those pitted areas on the obverse affect the grade. maybe FC can shed some light on that

Yeah, I don't normally even buy a buffalo unless it is spectacular, and this one was just wow without a loupe. Came from an old type set.

Would love to have more input. This coin may be enough to get me to make a submission earlier than planned.

I swear, I cant stop looking at this coin...got to wondering what the designer intended with a buffalo...so started comparing it to proofs to maybe get an idea of how close to new die state it is... honestly I like this ms coin better than most of the top graded proofs I saw on PCGS. Pictures dont really even do it justice.

Normally business strikes lack these details, the tails aren't there, horns, hair, etc...but this one just blows me away.

Looks like a strong strike from an early die state, much finer detail than a lot of 38-D's. With the nice luster, I'd go MS-67.

There isn't a single ding or tick on this coin I can find, the PCGS ms68+ has similar pitting on the upper neck, and it has better details in some areas than the pr69 1917 on PCGS coinfacts.

Not sure how it wont make ms68 or higher...considering the ms68+ on PCGS has a ding straight west of the nostril and has lesser striking.

Maybe I'm missing something about grading, I don't have the experience, not trying to be combative, this is why I ask, trying to study and educate myself.

The tail seems even better struck than the pf69 even. I just want to know what puts the grade where it is...

Strike minus flaws...and. Not sure where this coin could possibly improve...unless the grader is into pretty oxidation on a coin, or toning rather.

Okay,
I had some time to sit down and attempt to get some high magnification photos of the surface of thsi coin for you guys, I mean, am I crazy to think this should go higher than ms68?

Sorry for the photo overload, would like to document this coin well for one, and would love to hear from the grading experts.

I'm just wondering if and how much the pitting will affect the grade. since this obviously is an early strike I cant see the dies being corroded like this. my bet is the planchet was that way to start. only one way to find out and worth taking a shot. PCGS only shows 5 at MS68 on its pop report

Honestly looks like tooling marks to me on the neck, they swirl etc. Not to mention the PCGS ms68+ has them nearly the same but look more worn down on the die

Neck on the PCGS ms68+ as an example, as you can see I think earlier die states all have this, probably part of the master die.

I'll get a pic of that area under the scope tonight if I get time and show you.
