The grade doesn't matter to me, I bought the coin for the toning so in a way it's better because I got this at a great price

the only thing I can think of on this grade is that the graders must have noted that the luster was not there under the toning on the high points and that the toning was broken. I'm not seeing any numerous scratches or anomalies that would lower it to that grade

I thought it looked like a 63 before seeing the grade. The luster is not there and while its a nice piece it should not grade higher than 64.

Luster hiding under the toning. That is why it is hard for us to see luster in the pictures. Helps to provide a reason to prefer un-toned coins.

Quote: Helps to provide a reason to prefer un-toned coins. one big reason unless you are well schooled in toners and have the coin in hand it is very difficult to determine whats under it. you cant just go by the grade on the slab. this is why I stay away from them for the most part

63 seems dead on. Toning tends to hide marks in the photos.

Yep! It's actually very lustrous in person but there are a lot more dings hidden under the toning.

Screams *DIP ME!!* Might be a nice coin if that tone was removed. (Placing fingers in my ears now...)

With PCGS's recent "gradeflation" you could prob crack it and get a higher grade. But I would never do that. I like the old holder too much. And I love the toning. Shows that it didn't just sit in some US mint vault for decades.

Although I said 64 or 5, I am happy to be corrected back to 63 in this case.
