The "S" mint Morgans of 78-81 are some of the best struck, most lustrous Morgans ever made, and often found with prooflike surfaces, especially the 79-81. This is a really great example with full luster, relatively undisturbed frosty high points, a sharp strike and some contrast. My grade would be MS 65 PL.

need to see the cheek better to see what if any scratches are there. MS64+ may push it 65 depending on that area where there appears to be a scratch along the lower jaw line. reverse is very nice which is expected but the breast is a little weak for this year/mint

although PL is possible there is no way to determine that without some type of mirror reflection on both sides to determine depth.

Thank you all for the guesses and assesments it came in at MS64 my only complaint is that it did not come in with any PL designations. I can clearly see that it reflects like a mirror. although not like an actual proof, but hopeful it was PL.. anyway. would any body suggest sending it to another TPG and try for a PL designation?

without having to measure the depth by its impossible to determine a PL designation. I'm pretty sure PCGS would have looked at this. the reflection must be clear and between 2 and 4 inches on both sides for the PL. unless you can provide a guide to show this its just a guess as to whether to resub or not. put the coin at a 90 degree angle to newsprint. I think a magazine text works best if you would like more comments on that

Do not waste your money in sending the coin into another TPG for grading. The 79S is one of the most common dates for PL and DMPL and there are a lot of 79S coins that are semi PL. The SF Mint produced a lot of great Morgan's in 1879. I am sure the coin in hand looks great, so enjoy the coin. Below is a photo of my 79S MS65 that is also semi PL.
