Yes, we get how TV shows and ads work... but the prices on that type and grade don't lie.

And westcoin raises a good point. David is knowledgeable, but when it comes to ultra rarities, I'd pass on having him have the call on it. Nothing against him personally, I'd just rather have the person most qualified.

David is a really great numismatist so please I don't want anyone thinking I'm saying he is not. The coin was already in a NGC holder that is genuine and shows no signs of tampering, it's easily verifiable online as well. So the fact that NGC has already called it real is a moot point. I would think Rick knows enough to also check it online first.

This was 100% done as PR for the scripted TV show and the 99.95% of the public that watches it thinking it's all real, and happens exactly like they show it. David was probably already in town for either a coin show, or event NGC was at, or more likely scenario, the coin came in earlier and all this was put together at a later time to "look like a rare occurrence" that the coin just walked in.

Wouldn't the poker player know more to first contact a coin dealer than go to a pawn shop? How many people do you think come across a coin (or anything really) that they know is valuable, and just head to the nearest pawn shop to sell it for a random amount they came up with out of thin air?

I mean I've known some dumb people in my days but that would have to top the cake as one of the dumbest ways to act when one finds themselves in possession of a valuable object. No way the poker player (if that is the real story of how the coin came to be his even), didn't already look it up on Google or have some idea of it's value.


Remember this is Hollywood - it's all about the illusion of a show and making things appear to be interesting to those watching. I know I worked in the music business for many years as a photographer for a fairly famous artist, Hollywood is NOT real behind the scenes in any stretch of the imagination.

Interesting, it's either been determined it's an incorrect grade, meaning, the grade has changed on a resubmission, it's been shown to no longer reside in a NGC holder, it has crossed over to another grading service, or it has been determined to be not genuine or gradable per NGC, meaning NGC would have had to purchase the coin back from the current owner.

Those are my thoughts on why it's not showing up in NGC's certification verification portal.

My guess on why? I think it's been re-holdered on an upgrade attempt, we know NGC is not consistent with keeping NGC holdered coins IDs the same when reholdering them. I proved that in the wild wrong denomination strike Seated quarter with photos of both old and new slabs showing same everything but different coin ID number and adding a family collection name. See this thread on that for the photos: http://goccf.com/t/352929&whichpage=2#3049247 Wanted to add that during my research on the seated quarter/half it too disappeared from the NGC population and look portal until I found it in the Pedigreed holder, so there is a chance it's already been done and just has a new ID# (maybe new grade) and a custom label as well, I just haven't found it if so.

Knowing Rick he will be selling this ASAP so keep your eye open at various Auctions and in the news, unless he sells to a private owner, then we will know soon enough.

Thanks Gary, I was not aware of that. Being that I tossed out my cable TV and television in 2007 and haven't watched TV the way most people do. I DL'd a few shows and watch some streaming plus special events and that's about it. Pawn Shop isn't on my radar usually, and I haven't watched it for at least 4 years.

Since that is the case, then the coin probably went to a private seller and was reholdered, whether or not at the same grade we won't know unless it surfaces in a public sales forum (auction, news story, etc.) or goes into an open registry set.

Maybe it was a crossover to PCGS and became PR61 that sold via Heritage in 2015? The date and price would be the right time frame then. I don't really see anyway to tell if this coin is in another holder, since it's quite plain looking (plain for a matte proof high relief), no marks visible or toning spots, etc. at least not that would be easily seen from this video only.

Most of the bigger coin dealers I know would want to move a high dollar (six figure or nearly) as quick as possible unless it's only on consignment, then they might have some more leeway, but even a pawnshop like Ricks wouldn't want to tie up close to six figures for too long.
