Could be a broken MM punch. This was prevalent on the 1979-D cents.

This is a not the damaged punch issue which did appear on the tail of the SW serif. Think about how mintmarks are added to the die:

The punch is hammered into the tempered die. So this is not done just once. But several times. (I seen many punch marks on some die that are RPMs:

(Probably a Monday morning punch? LOL)
But if the punch is close and slightly off, the shape of the mintmark can be distorted, but still not show a spread. That is the case with your coin. The punch process moved the mintmark a little out of normal, but not enough to show a spread to be a RPM.

Thanks again! And just as a quick extra question, I presume the same thing happened to this?

Note the upper serif? That is spread. So It appears to be a north. I didn't see a match on coppercoins though.

Ah...I see, that does make sense when I compare the OP coin with this one.

So unlisted RPM then?

Well there might be a listing on the other sites? Wexler might have a listing there?

Well...I just checked and for some reason there are no RPM listings for any Wheat cent above the date of 1950.

Check again. Note the a couple lines down where it says

Quote:
RPM 1¢ 1950 to 1958

Check there.

Thank you, was looking in the wrong place.

There is only one RPM for 1952 D listed there, and it isn't a match.

John has a very large set of files that he doesn't add to the internet yet. If the year is complete, it will say final on that year/mint.

Oh ok. What do you mean it'll say final? This is what I'm seeing:
