Zohar444, I looked for the forum link to do just that, but I think it's been archived (over a year ago). I'm at work and the pics are on my home computer, so I'll try to do that this evening.

Quote: I personally gave it a 65 due to spot grading by an ANACs rep at a local show. I now believe his heart wasn't in it because he was drooling over an 1882cc DMPL that I also handed him. He bought that coin from me. Then you may have been talking to a rep and not a grader. With most if not all of the major services the graders are not allowed to buy and sell coins.

Nice coin.......I believe what helped the coin overall is the reverse. I would give it, just seeing the picture a 65/67 grade. Little busy on the cheeks for a MS66 but the reverse is very very nice so I agree with their overall grade. Bet your a happy camper.

Well, it arrived in yesterday's mail ... actually the mailman beat me home and left the little slip and I had to go to the post office after 5pm. I looks gorgeous in it's new home. Still no word on the variety attributions (3 coins: 1880-O VAM 49, 1878 8TF VAM 9, and 1878-S VAM 6). This holding my breath is tough.

Quote:I hope the 1880 O VAM 49 fares as well. Are you trying to say that you're holding a Mint State VAM-49? That's a "set your own price" coin, you know....

SuperDave, So nice to have you back with us! Although I have noticed you over on the VAM pages and CU Boards. Yes I have a potential BU 1880-O VAM 49 that I picked off the 'Bay. I did post it over on the VAM discussion boards awhile back. Some were leary of the seller (CKnol1) and believed she had a rep for "dipping" coins. The coin in hand shows full luster ... no breaks on the high points. It all depends on if the PCGS gurus see something I didn't. I still won't be completely unhappy if it comes back AU ... my personal opinion MS-61.

Yeah, I looked up the thread after my last post - that's a definite possibility. I'm pulling for you.
CKnol is one of my "secret weapon" sellers. Yeah, she has the rep, but she does too much volume to hit 'em all and she's righteous from a business standpoint. My next purchase from her won't be the first.
For the record, I haven't posted on CU in maybe 18 months....my nick over there is nothing like this one.

There is a "superdave" posting there ... thought it was you! Have you thought of pursuing a copyright infringement lawsuit? p.s. - CKnol1 was also the seller that listed the 1878 8TF VAM 14.11 possible and pulled it after one day. I posted that here awhile back and you commented on it. I have made several purchases from her too and have not been disappointed. The pictures, though washed out, show enough detail for me to easily cherry-pick and assign a grade.

That coin is clearly a 61, maybe 62 at most!

Results just in "Altered Surfaces" ... RATS! A heads-up to all who want to dip their silver ... DON'T! I couldn't tell, but PCGS could. I did get an 1878 8TF VAM 9 (first die pair) in XF40 and 1878S VAM 6 in MS62 off this same order. Sure would have liked seeing that 1880-O VAM 49 with an Unc grade in a PCGS holder.

Did you DIP IT or use dip and a cotton bud ? oh I see they have a rep as a dipper.. could go either way. Plenty only use the careful touchup method while some just dip the whole coin and quick wash
