Quote: I don't recommend this. Thank you, @nss! I'm sorry I wrote that! My bent was to pass the vexation to a professional in the industry to manage. I do not -- for one millisecond -- question the wisdom you offer, but I would love to understand the major forces that underlie that wisdom. Honesty, ethics? Compassion for the next buyer? Respect for the hobby? All are valid in my book. Did you have other(s) in mind? Kevin

Quote: Honesty, ethics? Compassion for the next buyer? Respect for the hobby? All are valid in my book. Agreed. Your opinion means I have to give more thought to my reasoning. So, I feel better about the coin once he made an offer, but still do not feel the best. In other words, this and the other opinions of the members have me feeling the TPG cost has less risk than the typical find we have posted here.

I also would not knowingly sell a fake. It would be unethical, and it would keep a counterfeit coin in "circulation". Your coin dealer seems reputable. Although I believe the coin is not genuine, I still believe it's worth a trip to a TPG to confirm.

I have heard good things about the dealer OP took the coin to, also they had the ability to see the coin in hand, as opposed to pictures. Seeing as you're also in south florida, I would use this link ( https://www.PCGS.com/dealers) if you have not already, to find a dealer who can send it in for you.

how exciting! I hope for you that it turns out to be genuine. it looks like the real thing to me, but I'm not anywhere close to being an 'expert' on it. to me the wear looks authentic, and a few other things point toward authentic, but that doesn't mean it is. I agree with everyone above: take your sweet time & continue the quest for authentication. good luck to you!

Quote:You should check out this NGC counterfeit article on this coin. https://www.NGCcoin.com/news/articl...ncoln-Cents/The "S" on your coin is fat, not like the four known shown in the article. Hey good lookin, whatcha got cookin? Don't I know you, lol? But yeah, that mark looks funny. And I'll just betcha a shiny new dime some if not all of those dealers who offered to buy it but wouldn't submit it for him had their suspicions too.

The pics here from ABS21, can anybody verify my observations? I thought that the lower serif on the S is supposed to align north to south, not slanted like this one is and also on the reverse, the letter B of VDB is supposed to be slanted in the middle, not straight as depicted in these pics.

Another indicator on a genuine coin is that the S mintmark should have a bump in the upper curve of the S. It is the same mintmark used on the 1912s Liberty nickel I am told.

To my eye, with the OP's coin, less wear on the 'S' than everything else. A case to have this coin authenticated, via a TPG.
