Of course, there's always the possibility of a player taking the cent pieces from the game--adding them to a coin roll let's say--and taking them to the bank in exchange for currency or other coins.

Maybe just buy a few thousand washers from a discount home improvement store.

Hey that is an interesting idea @ijn. The cheapest metal washers I can find on mcmaster-carr are 1.4 ¢ each.

You could always look up (search) "Stamping Blanks" but that might be more expensive than washers as stated - 1.4¢ is pretty cheap.

thanks, people. I can't use washers, cuz of the hole in the middle where an identifying symbol needs to be: 1/5 the coins would need a red heart in the middle, 1/5 a green heart, etc. but I see now... and I'm not sure why I didn't think of this before... i'll look for a spray paint that's washable (or way to stencil / stamp them with a washable ink/paint... that way there's no "defacing" argument of using us pennies: it can just be washed or rubbed off.

Maybe print some round stickers with the different colored hearts.

Sounds like something that The Educational Coin Company can help with.

Here's a link to a page on their site that provides lots of options for you: https://www.educationalcoin.com/wor...-10-000.html

commems - that was EXACTLY what I was looking for!! and thank you ALL for the responses! in regards to round stickers though: too expensive to buy the quantity required (in pre-made sheets) and too tiresome to cut manually. but, I've narrowed it down to 2 options:
1. coins in bulk from the 'world coins in bulk' site, painted w/ stencil or stamp.
2. US pennies, w/ smaller square stickers (printed myself on sticker paper, that I could quickly cut w/ a big paper cutter, and the square sticker would fit inside the face / circumference of the round penny. a removable sticker should appease any argument of defacing currency - 'if you don't like it, just take it off.'
as an interesting note - some local artist in my town 'paul jackson' was protesting the missouri quarter design choice several years ago. he made stickers of his design, that he was putting on quarters and giving out. I don't think he got in any real trouble, but someone might have told him to stop. I think he ended up just looking kind of silly, cuz... dude, they didn't pick your design, things don't always work out. but, maybe there was more to the story, like they were gonna use his design and changed their minds or something. I don't mean to talk bad about the guy - some of his water colors are great, and his quarter design was cool. I remember wanting one of his 'protest' quarters at the time, but was too busy to track one down.
and finally, I'm gonna add you all to my friend list. when I finish the game, i'll try to send/post you a pic of the whole thing, just for fun, so you can see the final product. take care, keep on! ~mike.

ok, last post about this. first off - no stickers, that's crazy: like I could peel all those.
just glue and paper squares. i'll be lucky if they stick longer than 4-5 rounds of play, so I don't think i'll have to worry about long term defacing issues.
the coins at that link, commems, are just too expensive. it would be great if there was a bank where you could say "gimme 10,000 of the lowest priced (given the current exchange value) currently circulating Centavo coins (all the same), be it form Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, or wherever. but, who would be silly enough to offer that service?

finally, here's a link to paul jackson's thing - he designed the missouri quarter, but then they changed it and didn't give him credit, I guess: https://www.pauljackson.com/Quartergate.pdf

thanks again everyone and take care.

I would use US pennies and spray paint w stencils, but I don't wanna worry about any gray area of defacing currency.

There are no laws against defacing US coins (There ARE laws against defacing currency, but currency doesn't include coins, not the way the laws are written.). You can do anything you want to US coins that isn't fraudulent except you can't put advertising on them and you can't melt cents or non-silver 5 cent pieces. Anything else is permissible.

A few examples of this would be the coins that are cut out, plated, elongated, etc. for jewelry and keepsakes.

well it took several months of working on this project in my spare time, but I designed a stencil grid/frame, learned 3d modeling software to design the files, and then had a friend print them. finally on to the next step. thanks for the advice, folks.

Looks a bit like like you are painting a red heart on US cents for your game tokens. I'm glad to hear that you've made such great progress.

How soon until someone posts an example they picked up in pocket change asking is it is a mint error?
