I get them through ebay, locally at the coin shops or using online dealers. On ebay most stuff is priced high so I shop around. Locally is cheapest but finding slabbed coins is a hit or miss.

Okay. Thanks for your help! I only paid a couple bucks for the coin, and since I live in New Mexico there's so little local trade it's hard to find anything.

Sorry I just checked again my MS63 is without cents. The with cents is more money. I'm going to the coin shop later in the week, I'll let you know the prices of a raw 1883 with cents.

Alright! That's what I thought - the with cents is worth significantly more than without.

I also got these a few years ago, my prices may be low for 2021, sorry again about the confusion between the cents and no cents. I checked ebay and these are much higher than just 2 years ago, I'll just say that my prices may not be accurate today.

No worries! At any rate, does the scratch still make the coin worth considerably less than say even a coin with far more wear but no detail grade? My Red Book from 2018 says that an 1883 with cents at G-4 is worth 20 dollars, at VG-30, and that was 4 years ago... but I would assume the scratch would put it even below a G-4? If it's just a case by case basis that's fine, I was just wondering if you have any idea.

Hi @T_F_F
I called up the local coin shop I usually use. The 1883 with cents RAW that he has go from $5 all the way to $110 for an MS 60.
A comparable VF/XF details will go from $30-$40 depending on the condition. It having environmental damage and the large scratch would put in on the lower scale.

Quote: is it just that there's so many of them out there a scratch makes it worthless? to answer your question. no, the number out there would not make it worthless and the amount of damage could make it anywhere from 10% to 60% of its retail value or even worthless if its bad enough. I'm glad you didnt pay $30 for this one.

to CCF! I found your coin elsewhere and I think you did quite well for a "With Cents" 1883 type II V or Liberty nickel in this condition at that price. I took the liberty of working over some of the images for you and this thread. This is your coin. DO NOT clean it! Leave it as is.

Looks like a VF Details coin. Quote: Okay. Thanks for your help! I only paid a couple bucks for the coin, and since I live in New Mexico there's so little local trade it's hard to find anything. I get that. If it was 4-5 dollars I might have picked it up if I wanted it bad too.
