So before I go any further...will I be able to crop it after I take the picture (using the camera's software or app), instead of using the phone's?

Yes
-First you open EOS Utility then hit live view this turns the camera on
-with the coin in camera view you make all your focus adjustments along with all other things that need to do done.
-when reedy you hit the photo button with the mouse
- now the pic will come up in DPP (digital photo pro.)
-chick on the pic and it comes up, you now make all your crop, size, colour
-after that is done you hit the top right button and bring it down to a size that is usable on CCF and also place it in a file that you want.

That is the basic of it with some smaller thing left out but if you do use it we can give you more info.

Actually, yes and no. I saw it once and had to go back and reread it. Right now I don't have a tripod. I'm working on that though. I'd rather buy from the store where I work if possible. So my camera is a Canon EOS Rebel t100 with an 18-55 mm lens. It is DSLR. Pretty basic but I got it because Canon EF and ES lenses are pretty much interchangeable so I can at least upgrade that lens. So would your technique work with this camera? From what I'm understanding it may very well work, but I want to be sure I'm reading it right. Thank you.

My technique would work with any camera. It's the process not the camera.

In addition to a tripod, you'll need to eliminate camera shake by using a delayed shutter release or a remote shutter release.

I use a macro lens, and I focus manually after zooming in on the coin using the display screen.

Here's an example of a quarter I photographed with a Canon T3i on a tripod with manual focus and a remote shutter release. The only lighting was indirect sunlight through a nearby window (hence the shadow below); no artificial lighting.

Ok...I'm willing to give it a try. I'm not in our camera department much (I'm a cashier) but I'm going to try and get a tripod in the next few days.

How do you do the delayed shutter release?

The T100 has a button on the back that allows you to turn on the self-timer. The instructions should be in your user manual. Using a tripod and a 2 sec delay will eliminate any camera shake that will cause a blurry photo. Then you just need to make sure you're well focused.

Please take a look at this thread

http://goccf.com/t/158182&whichpage=1

It's a long thread but does tell you what you to get and when done EVERY THING is done on the monitor you do not touch the camera. Instead of a tri pod we use a copy stand.

Glad I didn't buy it. That's not what I bid on, btw. I'm still trying to find a macro lens on a budget...and a copy stand. I bought a tripod...I'm gonna need that for some of my schoolwork so all is not lost...but for coins I want to get a copy stand. So far all I've found in the $100 or less bracket looks like it could tip over.

I'm just letting you know I have a copy stand on the way. Found a decent looking one on Amazon for under $40. I can't wait to try it you make it look easy.

hfjacinto, you, my friend, are the man! I am trying your technique out and, although I haven't taken my Morgan out of the flip, I used your technique to get this shot. I haven't quite got it down yet because I'm still learning this camera. But I'm beginning to have a little faith. I am seeing some progress! By the way that flip is coming off when the plastic slab gets here this weekend. Thank you!
