Most of the weakness on this coin is due to the VLDS dies, rather than strike. That VLDS die state is part of what likely makes this a VAM-3D.

Quote:
That would be cool if it was, but I looked it up and neither PCGS or NGC will attribute that VAM from the info on their sites.

Even if PCGS and NGC don't attribute this VAM, another option exists. After PCGS or NGC grades the coin, Variety Slabbing Service can attribute and add a sticker. It's inexpensive. Not exactly a big name in the game, but in my experience, they are spot on with attributions.

There is a decent premium for VAM-3D. Check ebay current and sold listings. If this verifies as a VAM-3D, you are well ahead on this coin.

Coin in Hand, looks much better then seller's pictures, however there are alot of scatches on the platic.

I shot the coin with the Apple 12 and did the closeups with th semi cheap digital microscope hitting all the areas I thought were appropriate for a VAM 3D

What say you?

@ftcollins, if you get some time to chime in on this, curious what your thoughts are from your initial observations.

MS64 for me, I've seen way worse MS63. The reverse is really nice.
Rest in Peace

The marks on the lower jaw and hard hit on the nose hold it to MS63 for me.

It sure looks like 1882-CC VAM-3D to me. It's not one of the "Hot 100" or similar VAMS, but it's a bit of a toughie to find. The only one I have handled was apparently an ugly AU. (I don't even remember it. My spreadsheet grade notation was "AUUG" though.)

Looking at the new pics, I need to reduce my grade estimate a notch. I had it at 64/64+ based on the original pics. Looking at the new pics, I have to think the slab factories will come in at MS-63. It still looks like it could snag 64, but both PCGS and NGC tend to weigh the obverse portrait dings a bit heavy.

My hunch on the VAM is that it may snag $75-ish over value, with an ask of $125-ish above value. Quite the combo - UNC, GSA, and a fun VAM. IMHO, you made a good purchase. You definitely didn't lose on this one.

I think the strike is too flat to go above MS-62 at best.

I'd give it 63-64. It is a Vam3D, how ever in my experience it's not
going to bring much of premium for the VAM. I can usually find several
on ebay at any given time. So much so that I stopped looking for them.

Luster and eye appeal on that coin is outstanding, and I believe easily carries it into MS-64 territory. And not a weak 64.
