You should do it in the way that suits your budget and your interest. There are a million ways to go about it. I bought a minimum grade of VF and tried to get the hardest, most expensive first. When it was finished I have been upgrading to a minimum of AU. As for key dates, forget that with my income.

when I started mine I decided I would keep each coin in AU-50 or above nothing less than AU-50 and when I started I didn't realize how hard and expensive that would be. But so far I have been able to keep to those standards and am pretty happy with the results so far. I also said once I buy a coin for the album that it is there for good, there will be no upgrades. Well that didn't last very long on some of the coins because a AU-50 when you don't know a series very well isn't a AU-50 when you get more familiar with the design. But all in all I am still rather happy with the results I have thus far and just can't wait until I get the last few coins to finish this album

My 7070 is not complete, but the coins I have run from F to AU; with one AG, one MS, and one proof. The MS and proof are my 1982 Washington Commemorative Half Dollars. The one AG coin is my 1911 Barber dime; I found that roll hunting many years ago and thus have a sentimental attachment to it.

I started the 7070 on a whim. I found myself with several type coins in 2x2's or hiding in the extra holes of my modern series Dansco albums. I decided I had a good start for a 7070 so I bought one!

Mines not complete either. Most of the coins are EF or better, although I have a few that grade lower. Some of the lower grade coins are ones I had on hand & will probably upgrade later. My 3 Cent is just a VF, but it came from my Dad's collection so it will not be upgraded.

I agree Bryan that is a beautiful set. Just curious as to why you put modern 50 cent commemratives rather than the classic ones? Those proofs are certainly attractive, but I went a different direction with BU toned examples of the old ones. The cool thing about this set is how each collector can indiviidualize it.

Bryan, your set is somewhat of a model for what I'd like mine to be someday grade wise. It is GORGEOUS! I am also partial to colorful naturally toned coins, and I incorporate them into my set when applicable. I'm going for AU or better too, but I may settle for XF on some of the copper. I have about 3/4 of it complete now, with a few VF-XF in the album waiting for an appropriate upgrade. My gold page is 1 coin shy of complete, but I'm also including some other old US gold within the type set.

Like others have said, it really comes down to your budget and what you can afford at the time. For me, most of mine will be in lower grades because I can not afford the ones I want at this time so I try to get the best grade for the money. The part about the folder is that you can always switch out coins of have two sets going at the same time depending on what look you want with your coins. On most of my sets I try to have a couple going at the same time that is broken down into three grades: low, medium and high. With this I try to get coins for the higher grade set and move the old one down to the next set, I have not done this with my 7070 set because I am focusing on others right now, but it helps out when I do not think the coin is good enough for my finest set. It also makes it nice to see the difference in the books going from a low grade example to something that looks like mint, just a thought.

To be honest the half comemoratives never excited me at all and when I received the 7070 album and saw there was 4 holes for the same type of coin it rather frustrated me. I really have no reasoning to back up why I went with moderns instead of classic except since that series didn't excite me in the least the prices probably had the most influence on my decision

Yeah, moderns in general don't do much for me. As a matter of fact, I removed my Biecentenial/Modern Dollar page completely to make room for additional gold.

That is an interesting thought. I usually just sell my old type coins on ebay when I upgrade them; but it would be cool to have several sets going so you can see what the same type coins look in differing statest of preservation. I like it!

I've picked up my 7070 after a long layoff. I'm going to go in order to finish it (22 left). Start with the one Half Cent I have left and work my way up. That way I will focus on one type for however long it takes to fill it. I will probably allow a month or so to fill each slot.

The few coins I have upgraded for different reasons I always had a giveaway on the forum so someone here could enjoy the coin as much as I did when it was mine
