Well, price seems high at VF35, which is what I have it at. If it pulls XF40, it's an OK price  |

I also have this one at VF-35
If it squeezes into XF40 you bought it at greysheet price, which is nothing to write home about.

What is the greysheet for this at XF40? The eagle has a full top feather outline on both sides. Many XF Barber halves in PCGS holders don't even have that so I'm not worried that it's VF. Looks like a keeper. Add me to the EF-40 parade. Pretty decent strike for the date. There may be a scratch below the eye and a little chatter in the field east of Miss Liberty, and it may want to go for an acetone swim.

Greysheet is $325, so you actually paid more than a dealer to dealer price. Typically we hook each other up with 10-20 percent back of greysheet.

Why would a dealer give up the opportunity to make the $200 spread to retail unless they were desperate for cash. This isn't a 1881-S Morgan dollar that you can buy by the truckload in an MS63 PCGS holder. I think that your claim that I overpaid for this coin because I didn't get a 35-45% discount from retail is ridiculous. I buy coins all the time under greysheet.
Dealers buy coins and sells amongst each other for back of greysheet.
That is common knowledge when you're a dealer or friends with them.
I understand now that you didn't know that.

I've personally bought plenty of coins on ebay at wholesale, or close to it, and sometimes under. Especially raw. If you see this as XF then you did just fine, and that's all that matter bc it's your coin, but then why post and ask for opinions? I'm still at VF35, and personally wouldn't have paid more than $280-$300. That said, I'd also have to probably keep looking a lot longer to find my deal than you did. |

Everyone has their own idea of what a fair price for a coin is. My idea, based on my situation, is probably different than yours based on your situation. But saying thst I should expect to pay nothing more than the price that a dealer provides to other professionals as a courtesy and that anything above that is overpaying is unreasonable.
Dealers may, if they are able to, provide back of bid pricing, but they either expect a reciprocal courtesy down the road or are really in need of cash. Otherwise they can wait for a retail customer to come around to pay the full retail price.
I have received bargains, paid greysheet and I have paid way above "retail" in some cases. It depends on the situation. To take a broad brush and say that anything above 10-20% below greysheet is overpaying in naive and disrespectful of the value that dealers provide by sourcing material that we all need to complete our collections.
Back of bid pricing is a dealer courtesy not a right that everyone should expect.

Usually when I hear greysheet, I cringe because the price always seems high (in my eyes). There's no harm if you get coins under greysheet because the dealer makes money, you make money, and everyone's happy. You just can't expect to get as many coins, as the deals don't turn up everyday. I also find ebay's prices are a tad high as a retail setting, you can find better deals at shows and shops. Suffering from bust half fever. Ebay's pricing is for sure too high typically.
But of course you can find deals there as well.
Numismatic student- It's obvious you also don't belong to a coin club. You will get great deals there and get coins back of greysheet all the time.

I do belong to a coin club and they have monthly auctions with a 5% auction premium to support the club, pay for donuts, coffee and the holiday party. Generally they don't have any material that I am interested in but it is cool to hang out with people that have been collecting for a long time and are very knowledgeable. It does feel like I'm st s nursing home and sadly people pass away more often than I find comfortable. Haven't been to a meeting since the pandemic started. I would feel awful if I made someone sick.

I feel special then.
My coin club doesn't have premiums of any sort, and when auctioning it is nowhere near retail.
It's always back of greysheet and if it were retail there would be nothing but scoffs.
