Wow, that is interesting, looks like some kind of lamination issue/strikethrough/ planchet flaw with a silver chunk attached.

But can't tell if some is PMD or combination of both.

The coin is well damaged but has a Lamination on the Reverse that is starting to peel.
Not sure on the Obverse if that is damage or another lamination.

Appreciate the reply. Do either of you think that the chunk of silver on the reverse is from the missing portion of the Queen's ear / hair? Although that portion of the queen does not look normal to start with.

The photos are not great, are you sure it's an 1888 and nit an 86 or 85? There is definitely a lot of damage to the coin considering the condition and lack of wear in the obverse.

Wrekkdd, that would be my cheap Chinese scope in action. Not positive on the 1888. Maybe my phone will take a better picture, I will try.

So what you guys are trying to say is that the extra metal is basically solder and the extra chunk of silver is remnants of the PIN where it was soldered to the coin? So technically if I picked that chunk of metal off it should still have the rest of the last digit underneath. I will assume the waviness to the reverse is from heat.

When it comes to collecting errors, experience is the best teacher. Trust me, every error collector has all been down that road, and I admire your optimism of taking that experience as a lesson learned.

My advice now, is to buy the error coin book, before the error coins. I think the 2nd Edition is already sold out, but I think Joe has a revised edition planned.
