Slight wear visible on the cap, drapery, and high points of the hair. I see faint blotches in the obverse fields which might be evidence of incomplete rinsing after a dip. Otherwise, the coin appears to have escaped any abrasive cleaning or obvious abuse. Sharp obverse stars suggest the obverse die was in good condition. AU50 or 53 seems fair.
ST in STATES and the adjacent part of the motto are very weak. Is this a normal characteristic of this variety? A possible filled die scenario comes to mind.

That area on the reverse is weak in strike, because that is the deepest portion of the bust on the obverse. The metal flows through the obverse design while the reverse is left weak. The banner is almost always weak, but when STATES is weak, then it is just an even more uneven strike. Suffering from bust half fever. You can see that the striking weakness in the reverse that others have pointed out carries over to the obverse at the fabric draping liberty's busom.

I would also be at AU-50 depending on how bad the scratch is on the neck. I would say you did very well if this is not a details coin.

At $322? All day.
To me, the scratches aren't enough to detail a circulated coin in the EF/AU range. There is an old cleaning, and the big question is whether that is market acceptable. That's a tossup.
You're into it in VF range. If this hits AU Details, you are also spot on for the price. If it straight grades, you really scored. The only risk would be EF Details, and that's close to your price, maybe within $20-25, and sure wouldn't be anything to lose sleep over. It's a nice example for the price.

I'll stay at AU50, possibly AU53, leaning towards details. Agree with FC, a details grade would be a tossup with a TPG. Nice coin regardless. |
