Now this lower grade example looks like the real deal to me, gradewise a G-6 to me.

So is it safe to say one slid past Numismatic Student as genuine but was actually fake? Yes, yes it is safe to say

I knew it was a ringer as soon as I saw the date. That's why I asked how it had been acquired.

Yes, yes it is safe to say Anyone who posts grades on CCF on a regular basis has most likely posted grades to a counterfeit. My radar went up that the coin may be a fake after I read the paralyse post about where the coin was obtained.

I just read through all the comments hoping that the most recent post to resurrect this would be showing it slabbed and getting a straight 'authentic' grade from PCGS or NGC thus throwing a real spanner in the works. Anyway, in this case, I'm sure it is a fake due to all the reasons mentioned, and if you compare it to authentic examples you can see why.

Stand by my opinion that it's 100% bogus as the day is long (and somewhere a dealer who needs more education cost themselves $140.)

I'm curious if you informed the coin shop that a bunch of people here told you it was fake.

Quote: Well it was not fake sold it to local coin shop got 140.00 for it I'm betting the owner was not well versed in early copper and just assumed it was legit. I hope you sold this to them before you knew it was a counterfeit otherwise shame on you for ripping them off . in fact whether you knew or not you need to go back to them and give them their money back.

For confirmation as to this being counterfeit, I posted the coin on another forum. Jack D. Young, Early American Coppers (EAC), says both the obverse and reverse are wrong for the date. He even had a couple of them in his collection he calls The Dark Side.

May the power of guilt compel you to return the coin shop owner's money!
