First of all ignore the width of the rims because they can trip you up. If the "wide rim" die is misaligned to 6:00 you can hav a "wide rim" with narrow rims. I've seen it happen.

The key is the space between the bottom of the 1 and the rim. If it is less than the thickness of the upright of the 1 (about 1/2 the thickness) it is a "wide rim" or Near date. If it is clearly further away than the thickness of the upright (about 1 to 1 1/2 times the thickness) then it is a "narrow rim" or far date. The near date is the scarcer of the two. Look at the distance between the rims and the 1 on the pictures above and you can clearly see it.

I have several near dates. I never thought about a MAD affecting the rim width. It's a good point to keep in mind when explaining this. Thanks Conder.

Compare a 1979-P to a 1980 dollar and you'll know what to look for.

Coop's images are excellent and really let you see the difference in the distance between the 1 and the rim on these two varieties.

Something of note: The date is located the same as the regular, just the rim extends closer to the date.

Thanks Conder101

I picked up a wide rim variety last week. It was sitting in a register that I had peered into when checking out, I asked about/for it and they gave it to me.

Speaking of Coop's pictures, there seems to be slight differences in the numerals of the dates.

The rounded ends on the 9's? Blunt on the normal ones?

Nice clear pictures, very well done, I believe this coin is a sleeper and also collect them, the key to telling from all others, as CONDER101 stated is the base of the numeral # 1 is very close to the rim.

Mike: Actually the rim is very close to the 1. That is why they call it a near date.

The rim on some is wider making the date appear to be closer to the rim as mentioned earlier.
And to the forum plcmac.
