How do they test the composition in a slab?

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) I believe. Rick tested it in the slab but has since cracked the NGC slab and will retest the coin before sending it to PCGS.

Well it looks like it tested as a normal bronze once it was removed from the slab. Bummer! Still have the J300 though!

Too bad, but maybe you'll get a PR65 in a PCGS holder. Beautiful coin regardless.

We agreed to crack it, test it and send to PCGS, so no, I will be the one paying for the PCGS grading.

So an update to this one as well. Rick attributed it as a J-356a and PCGS graded it PR65 (Copper Nickel) struck with S-2 dies.
It weighs 3.14 grams, so it is not a CN as they are closer north of 4.5 grams. Exact XRF analysis said:
94.54% Copper
3.04% Tin
1.92% Zinc
The rest being trace elements. Interestingly, XRF showed 0.228% Silver.
This coin is now part of Ricks attribution guide listed as J-356a but noted that it is in a PCGS Holder graded PF65 Copper Nickel. I think its the J-356a based on it being a thick planchet.
