Dig deeper. First look at the rims? Are they normal? Yes or no? On a Struck Through Grease issue, the rims will be normal:  Do the rims look like this coin? No. So the issue is not a Struck Through Grease issue. Also the reverse rim is normal, jug the obverse is affected. So this is not a Struck Through Grease issue. Note the mention of a struck through a capped die? What happens on a coin with the strike of a capped die? The rims look more like a saucer. Thus they are not protecting the devices and design.   Saucer like:  Note this on this coin. So it is not a Struck Through Grease, but a struck through a capped die. Why? Rims that are not formed normally. Train the eyes to see what is there. Also note what is not there. Thus you can as a detective, rule out what is could be, and what is really is. Giving answers should have a basis. So when helping with an answer, helping a student to see what you are seeing is important? Why? Because he will learn the process of what is there, and what isn't there. That is how new posters learn more. So they can see what we see on a coin. How we determine what we are seeing, then explaining why we come to that conclusion. Then they will see what we see on their coin. This is a difficult one to sort out. I see signs of it being either one but feel Coop is correct about this being a Struck Through Grease error. The "waves" don't resemble folds from a capped die in this late stage. Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

More of an aging die cap that is deteriorating, thus filling/preventing the devices on the die, so that nothing can rise on the struck coin. Note how this happens on the extra images I just posted. As mentioned earlier, there would be a rim on a Struck Through Grease, The cap prevents the rim to form, because it is covering the gutter on the die. The more the die cap deteriorates, the more of the rim/devices/design will eventually be seen again on the coins struck with that covered die. |
