Gotta love the severity of this one. Quote: Looks like some renovations going on. Sure does. Like it was being stripped all the way down to the studs.

There were a ton of these from that era. This one being above average size. I bet there were rolls of lamination error nickels when they were issued.

TB I installed a slate hearth on the top floor there . It was a tiny little winding staircase to get up there but I swear I only bumped the walls a couple of times. I didn't do that much damage! Wasn't me !

Stoneman this has your name all over it! But at least when you finish up it should look all fixed up and better than before. Just be more careful next time, eh?

Just having a bit of fun, no walls were bumped. It was a nice experience, getting to do some work in a part of Monticello that can only be seen on special tours.

Quote: ... getting to do some work in a part of Monticello... Very cool. It sure would be neat to come across the cornerstone with a time capsule in it. Or maybe there was a cent from when it was built or remodeled set into a stone somewhere?

Could be possible. One of my helpers found a corroded Indian cent when we were replacing damaged marble column bases at Jefferson's Rotunda at UVa. It had been placed between the stones when similar work was done in the early 1900's. I did find a time capsule under a massive stone door sill that I was removing and replacing at the Presidents residence at UVa. (Carrs Hill https://carrshill.virginia.edu/ ) Got a glance at some newspaper before it was handed over for preservation. One last While removing a Dupont era carved marble Mantle at James Madison's Montpelier ( https://research.colonialwilliamsbu...ntpelier.cfm ) I found the remains of Madisons original fireplace mantle behind it. The archeologists were head over heals as they originally had no clue of what Madison had put there.
