I AM EXCITED. I checked my collection I have a 1972 German 10 marks silver UNC commerating the 72 Games. I have started!!!! Not to mention I have a few in sight on ebay aswell. Is anyone else going after commerative olympic games coins? |

I have some, Spanish 5 ptas for Barcelona '92, 1 Ruble for '80 MockBa:) (Moskow), some Turkish for summer olympics, I hopefully will get a few commemorating Torino. a few more may be in my collection, I need to check.

KLD I can probably do a little digging and locate a commemoratie silver from some of the U.S. games. The 2006 Canadian Lucky Loonie can be picked up on ebay right now, or perhaps from a forum member, dirt cheap compared to other Olympic issues. The Canadian Mint will not sell the Lucky Loonie out of country so ebay or a Canadian collector is required to get your hands on one! Let me see what I can locate in the next few days. The Greek $2 should also be an easy one to get. The U.S. deals strictly in silver but I think I can find one that is very affordable! |

This may sound silly, but would I be correct in saying most of the commerative host nation coins would have the rings on them?

I don't think we can make such a statement.
I know only the latest Euro commoratives have rings since 2Euros are bimettalic.
Any others you know?

I found A 10 mark from the German Olympics. So I have started. ebay is a bit quiet at moment with olympic coins so I will wait patiently for them. haven't decided which 2002 ozzie one to get yet. Any suggestion, cheap preferably silver, no packaging? Edited by KLD

If it's silver, I think one of the cheapest is the Japanese 1964 100yen, but the 1000 yen is a bit too expensive. I think in the store here in Sydney, he was offering the 100 yen for around 5 dollars and the 1000 yen for around 50 aud. Will double check to confirm the prices. I'm not too sure about the rest of the world silver olympics, but I must insist that the Moscow '80 Olympic coin set is extremely tempting and actually a stunner with it's packaging. :) Note, you should go to ebay.de (german ebay), under munzen, and under munzen motive, olympia, there should be plenty of Olympic coins. German ebay is slightly unique as it has various catagories, unlike the US or the Aussie site. P.S. there is two dots above the u - I can't just type them in here. All U.S. Olympic commemoratives will be silver, either in half dollar or dollar size. While they can be pricey a great number of them are really affordable as U.S. commemoratives, especially Olympic coins, tend to drop in value as collectors tend to move on to newer issues. The 95 issues are relatively cheap while the 96 issues are through the roof. The U.S. learned NOT to get carried away with multiple issues or two year series as everyone would buy the first year, get burnt out, but not the second years issues. Most Olympic releases now are only one coin. You could build quite a collection and there are huge amounts of coins released with the Olympic Rings! Good luck!

I think my criteria has been set.
Must be from host nation dated the year they were held.
Preferrably silver in high grade.
ooooh yeah and it must be inexpensive...............lol

I believe my dealer will be buying a few U.S. silver Olympic commemoratives in the near future as I helped price them last weekend. Will keep you posted as none of what he was offered were costly by any means.
