You know, silver coinage is a real danger I believe. Once you get one, you will start wondering how the others will be like. And when that happens, you will want a whole silver set yourself like the Moscow silver olympics set. :D

Sap....I just had a quick browse around on " ebay" and there is a set of Olympic coins & stamps on auction that is minted in 1948 after the war. This may be the first of the modern day olympic issues.

The olympics of 1948 was held in London and IMHO was great in bringing the world together again after those terrible dark years of the second world war. Here is the link to that auction .

That could well be a fair dinkum 1948 Oympics souvenir. The stamps are Olympic commems, but the coins are all normal circulation issues - Britain didn't issue any special souvenir coins for the Olympics. Still, it's the closest thing you'll get for the '48 Olympics. Can't make out the dates on any of the coins, either, but at least none of them seem to be post-1948. KLD, if you're going to bid, you might want to ask the seller to confirm that the dates on all the coins are 1948. In any event, at 99p opening bid, you can't go too far wrong.

I really wanted to have the commerative coins with the rings on the coins.
The problem will be that I would only be able to get coins from half of the host nations. that wouldn't really be a full set would it?
Any more suggestions, thoughts?

Start with the 2004 Euro from Athens. It shouldn't set you back much.

Perhaps, the easiest type set would be to collect circulated Olympic coins, which would kill most of the extravengza precious metal coins. From there, after dealing with the ni-cupro or other cheap metal coins, you can work on the silver ones. :D

That is exactly where I want to start. Then Turin etc...
May I ask where did you get that one from?

That particular 2 Euro piece is definately a lot cheaper than the Platinum ruble that I have!!! lol
I actually bought that in 2002, and that is even before the design of the commemorative 2 Euro was out. Now that the design is awfully similar, I should sell it or trade it other platinum rubles. :)

I think I might need to start with the cheaper ones.

KLD I can probably do a little digging and locate a commemoratie silver from some of the U.S. games. The 2006 Canadian Lucky Loonie can be picked up on ebay right now, or perhaps from a forum member, dirt cheap compared to other Olympic issues. The Canadian Mint will not sell the Lucky Loonie out of country so ebay or a Canadian collector is required to get your hands on one! Let me see what I can locate in the next few days. The Greek $2 should also be an easy one to get. The U.S. deals strictly in silver but I think I can find one that is very affordable!
