Hmm... #1: AU-55 with weak strike, #2: AU details, #3: AU-58, #4: AU-55 details There is too much detail in the hair on all of these for me to go any lower than AU on all of these unless my grading on early coppers is way off. Wow, the responses are all over the place now that I look... When this contest is over, I wonder if CarrsCoins will chime in with his analysis...

Thank you to all who participated! I realize this was a pretty tough challenge. Before I post the "answers" I would like to note that all four examples are STRUCK COUNTERFEITS. The genuine source coin was a highly tooled/ repaired 1798 S-158 variety large cent that has been documented in my continuing research. So the entire slab of each example and grade is as follows: I will review the responses and announce the "winner" shortly!

despite having seen these exact coins before, read your article on them, and knowing the source of the post I was still half way through grading them before it clicked. these are some scary good fakes.
for anyone looking for a tell - there is a dig at the bust tip that is on all of the coins. another tell is the damage above TY in liberTY present on all of these examples.
thanks for sharing Jack!

OK, looks like nfine and nickelsearcher tied with 1 right answer each! So, for a runoff they have the opportunity to guess the TPG grade of the 5th example:

I'll say example #5 is graded AU-53.

Wow - a runoff and I'm a lucky participant. Let's save the suspense - I'm at AU55 for the tiebreaker.
