So I was asked if I would run a contest to celebrate my 100 post "milestone" on the forum.

The rules are pretty straight forward- I am asking the readers to review the images of these three large cents and then state the actual TPG grade on the slab.

I will tally the number of correct responses and the Member with the most correct will be declared the winner; if a tie, the correct answer for the 4th example (image #4-runoff) will determine the ultimate winner.

1 try per contestant, no do-overs.

The contest will be open to all Members here with shipping addresses within the continental US until noon Wednesday, Dec 14. I will tally beginning on my day off, Thursday.

The "prize" for winning is an 1803 Half Cent from my Dark Side Collection.

Example #1:
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

Example #2:
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

Example #3:
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

Run-off #4:
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-
100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

Just a note, I own 3 of the 4 listed examples.

Good luck!

Thank you for having a contest. I was hoping for an easy one, but I am not that good at grading and the large cent is way out of my comfort zone. Congrats on your

Wow, a pretty wide range of guesses! Shows how hard it is to grade these. I'd say:
#1 XF-40
#2 XF-45
#3 AU-50
#4 AU-53

Hmm...

#1: AU-55 with weak strike,
#2: AU details,
#3: AU-58,
#4: AU-55 details

There is too much detail in the hair on all of these for me to go any lower than AU on all of these unless my grading on early coppers is way off.
Wow, the responses are all over the place now that I look... When this contest is over, I wonder if CarrsCoins will chime in with his analysis...

Thank you to all who participated! I realize this was a pretty tough challenge.

Before I post the "answers" I would like to note that all four examples are STRUCK COUNTERFEITS. The genuine source coin was a highly tooled/ repaired 1798 S-158 variety large cent that has been documented in my continuing research.

So the entire slab of each example and grade is as follows:

100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

100-Post-Milestone:-Guess-The-TPG-Grades-And-Win-A-

I will review the responses and announce the "winner" shortly!

despite having seen these exact coins before, read your article on them, and knowing the source of the post I was still half way through grading them before it clicked. these are some scary good fakes.

for anyone looking for a tell - there is a dig at the bust tip that is on all of the coins. another tell is the damage above TY in liberTY present on all of these examples.

thanks for sharing Jack!
