Quote: am I wrong in feeling dealers should know and follow the rules. They should be the front line of defense against crap like this? Everyone should be following the "rules" Front line defense needs to be yours and my "knowledge". Buyer beware. John1

If you're talking about defacing legal tender I don't believe the RCMP or any other police agency has ever gone after someone for applying plating to a coin. There is nothing fraudulent here on the surface. The auction listing says the coins are gold plated, which one can assume is true based on the photos. Anyone who is an actual collector will know immediately that these coins were not plated at the RCM. As for anyone else, who would that be?

Agree with wallyb and Smallcentguy. Bottom line--buyer beware.

Plated coins have duped many collectors in the past. ALTERED coins are illegal in Canada. Even though CA states they are plated that does not remove the liability of them. The attempt to resell them as off metal errors is very common. Neophyte collectors are generally most fooled by them and may/have caused them to spend recreational funds on other safer items leaving numismatics. The hobby can not afford that. The dealer here paid less than melt for sure and is trying to make a profit on it. I find this typical and lacks any common sense! I find the responses interesting and I thank all for them.

I just sent an email via CA website asking......I know you (CA) know that selling these are illegal so why are you trying? I will post the response if I get one.

I'm with Mikey on this. Why is a reputable dealer like CA trying to sell something to convince neophytes that they are the real thing and probably from the mint? I guess money talks by putting something in an auction. At least trying to sell it at the store, the server could tell the buyer that it was after market and worth scrap value.

OK, guys I'm not trying to side with the Dealer here. Just pointing out that there are 'technical' illegalities that don't see enforcement, this is one of them. As far as the newbies being ripped off is concerned, I'm sure that happens every minute of every day on platforms like the Bay. I think it far less likely to occur during a live on-line auction where most of the participants are knowledgeable with fairly deep pockets. I do think that having an item like this doesn't serve the Dealer well because it is cheap, dime store crap that no collector would touch. Maybe it's there as a novelty item.

wallyb it is the reseller. The Chinese manufacturers of the counterfeits sell them for a dollar....the resellers are the scammers however both are wrong.

I'm curious to see what CA comes back with. FYI nickelsguy, there are plenty of provisions in the CC that don't get enforced these days. This would be one of those, however I do agree that it doesn't look good for a reputable dealer, as I believe this one to be, to auction off this stuff.

I totally agree wallyb! We lose more collectors due to death than we gain with youth every year and all must help prevent any new collector from getting scammed and dealers should be at the leading edge of that.....not potentially enabling it.

while I 100% agree , I never want to see a potential collector be ripped off, is this really any different, than the embellished 5$ silver maples, they are essentially defaced, with the added gold enhancements from secondary people or the added colour scenes. these simple added accessories can easily double the price, if not more.

Are they illegal? What about those coloured Canada Silver Maple Leaf Coins from Germany that sell on ebay. Those coins have been sold on ebay for years. Aren't 3rd party coloured coins also "altered"?
