VF 25 is my guess / opinion ... age and rarity generally have a bit of an influence (on the high side)

Well, those who graded it VG10 have it exactly right. PCGS VG10.

I find it interesting that quite a few opinions graded it higher. Maybe the coin looks that way on first inspection? but on closer examination it is a high end VG.
Either way, I am very happy to have it.

imo PCGS did not take into consideration weakness in the strike. a VG10 coin is going to be a lot flatter and no way would it have that hair detail. I think the coin is under graded

6 graded it VF range
3 graded it F range
2 graded it VG range

I hope you guys are correct.
I bought this coin in 2007, and have no idea how long before that it was submitted to PCGS.

Could it be that grading standards have changed (that much) in the intervening years?

I would have said VG too, but I also don't take into consideration weak strikes, honestly because I don't know any better. But I would expect that PCGS does indeed know better. It's a beautiful coin.

All TPGs commonly screw up, knocking the grade for strike weakness. I see XF-AU bust halves in mid VF holders all the time. In that case the grading standards haven't changed.

Fantastic dollar. Count me in the VF group - hair detail is too strong for a VG. I'd compare it to others struck from the same die pair and I bet you will find it is severely undergraded. You can get free access to Bowers dollar book on the PCGS site to figure it out.

im a vg10. I think you guys are overvaluing how much hair detail there is on the lower locks of this coin. the pickups are central hair detail and the feathers on the eagles wings.

here is the photograde 10. its nearly identical to this coin.

here is the 20. there is a lot more detail on the central hair and the egales wings on this than the coin in question. you get feathers on the eagles breast at 20.
