Most likely struck on a slightly thin planchet. Sometimes the planchet stock is rolled a little thin, especially toward the end of a strip.

it is still within specs though. Pretty amazing that you can feel the weight difference of .6 grams.

If it were silver, it would be heavier, not lighter:

Planchets aren't weight except gold ones. So figure in the tolerance to see if it is within the range. If so, then it is normal.

I totally get that, and by the way. Thank you all for the info. It is greatly appreciated. But it just does not explain the silver ping sound VS the clad thunk sound it makes when I drop them on the table. The 2018 quarter makes a silver ping sound . Like a 1964,63 quarter would do.

There are silver 2018-s quarters but those as mentioned should weigh more around 6.250 grams. This is below typical tolerance which suggests to put up better photos front, back, and rim. Perhaps one comparing to another 2018 you have that weighs 5.67ish.

Sometimes these were rolled thin planchets, or struck onto a different wrong planchet, wear or acid or damage etc in the past.

The US minted different series of the Pictured Rocks quarter and this is just one of the 2018 designs for example. There is the 2018 P quarter, 2018 D quarter, 2018 S quarter, 2018 S proof quarter and 2018 S silver proof quarter. Proof coins are essentially coins that have more detail. They are minted on special planchets and it takes longer to produce them. They are specifically made for collectors so you won't find any in your spare change unless they were dumped out of the set.

Sound is not a very reliable test. Many things can alter the way a coin sounds, the bonding of the clad layers, internal fissures or laminations. If a coin sounds "off" it may be reason to look at it closer, but is not a real test in itself.

Better photos are needed in order to provide expert analysis. Please place the coin on a flat surface and take direct close-up photos of both the front and back of the coin.

So far its looking like you've got a rolled-thin error instead of a wrong stock error. A coin struck on a planchet punched out of stock that was rolled too thin on the rolling mill is called a rolled thin planchet but as an example, a 1974 quarter was struck on a rolled-thin planchet. It weighs 4.92 grams instead of the normal 5.67 grams (non silver normal weight 5.67).

You can also check if there is any differences you can see when held next to another 2018 with a normal weight, any tapering/thinning.
