Agree with AU details, corrosion. It wouldn't hurt to soak it in acetone for a day or two to see if some of that staining or discolored glue on the obverse lifts up.

what a shame as this is a higher grade 01S. a straight graded AU50 has a value in the $25k-30 range an XF45 pretty not much less than that. PCGS shows on about 10 coins total bein graded in those grades combined.

personally I would send this coin to PCGS and have it professionally conserved. its worth quite a bit even at details and worth slabbing. I would not touch this coin myself.

You must be thinking of the 1901-S quarter.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think that this coin would straight grade after conservation from PCGS/NGC?

No way to tell without seeing the finished product, but I seriously doubt it. Big gamble unless you bought this way below straight-grade value.

I think there is very little chance that this would straight grade after conservation. The surface damage looks irreversible.

The stain is just a bit more prominent than I thought it would be. but I don't want to return the coin. I only paid about $250 for it, so even with the environmental damage and staining, I think I got a pretty good deal. I'm more so wondering what it would grade at and if I should have it professionally conserved.

If you're happy with it a that price, fine. But you'll have a heck of a time selling it at this price, I guarantee. Return it and buy a straight-graded coin.

That is a great price for it. It is definitely worth trying to conserve and slab, even if it still details. There just aren't that many of these in AU

I would slab and sell if I were you. Hopefully there is no reason to bodybag it!
