Replacing the carpet, as kbbpll suggests, may shorten the process of getting rid of the smell. Quote: I tried the acetone soak. The mouse is still dead.

OMG! We use a bit of orange/lemon oil mixed with water or Poo-Pourri for all sorts of smells. I know that Poo-Pourri sounds funny but, it works for all kinds of "other" things. I would remove and replace the carpet, thoroughly clean everything, spray with one of the above and leave the door open to air out for a bit. Ugh! You could use one of our precious masks (hmmm) for a while until everything clears up! Since you removed the offending critter, the smell should disappear rather rapidly. There's nothing worse than rigor mortis! Poor little guy! Bury him in your yard. He deserves a decent burial for his efforts!

I just realized I can use this to my advantage. The Redfield hoard is known for fruit preserve stains on the silver dollars. Perhaps my hoard can be known for its unique fragrance.

Now to think up a good name for it. "The Stench of Death Hoard" just doesn't seem to be too catchy...

@trdhrdr007, reminds me of the Mythbusters episode when they put an entire dead pig in a car.

First ... It's great to see the sense of humor here!! Next ... "Dead rodent smell" brings back some interesting memories for me. My first real-significant-money-job (we're talking $1.65/hr!) when I was something like 15 or 16 was in a place that raised rodents (white rats, mice, gerbils) to sell to pharmaceutical labs for their product testing. On the morning feeding rounds you could always tell when an animal had croaked overnight. Yep, I can still remember that smell. Finally ... Getting rid of that smell could be tough. I would toss anything soft: the carpeting, and also all the vinyl. Those materials have probably adsorbed the stench molecules, and it might take a very long airing out time to make them anywhere close to acceptable. Good luck.

What a story ... Yikes ! I'm not sure I would want my safe smelling like vinegar for 6 years either ... a carpet cleaner attachment may just do the trick. Make sure you keep us posted ;)

Every cloud has a silver lining.
With a residual rigor mortis sort of smell, you should have no problem with proving provenance of your coins.
They should have acquired an olfactory sort of patina.
