I noticed some 1944's had the 1st 4 particularly close to the S and a lot of ebay listings call that a "4 over S". Y'alls lack of excitement is leading me to think it's just die positioning and super common.

to the CCF The mint mark was hand punched into the die before 1989. You will find the MM in any position on coins before 89. The rule back then was as long as it was below the date and to the right of the lapel. As for ebays 4 over S, that's an ebay made up error to separate people that don't know what they are buying, and their money. ebay is not the place to learn what an error or variety is. This is the site for that.

In that period the MM was punch by hand. So the position and orientation can be different from coin to other.
As Cujohn mentioned, 4 over S do not exist and it is just a e-Bay scam of the hundreds of scammers junk people there.

Don't think a 4 over S is possible, but in order to be certain, please pose up a better closeup of the date and MM area - in good focus please.

Yup, 9 of them on ebay searching on "4 over S." Where do they come up with this stuff? It keeps getting wackier and wackier.

to the CCF "4 over S" is just an ebay scam to separate coin novices from their money. Come here for real knowledge.

You to understand that first the Die it is squeze and the the S was hand punch. The 4 was there when S was punch.

That's what I figured. But I always come here to make sure, because Google seems to be equally as unreliable as ebay. Thank you all for your answers!

I'm not even sure what this is, but it could possibly be mistaken for a '4' over 'S'. BTW: I see stuff all the time on coins-- it's kind of creepy! Origin: I was just looking to see if this coin had an S/S, then thought, whoa! it's an S/S/S.. yeah right! Panning out it looked like it skidded over to the date for a quick visit before exiting. Whatever it may be, it will always be worth a penny

to the forum! In the future, you should always start your own thread/post, less confusing. As far as your coin, cannot tell with the current pic but looks like PMD, just damage and circulation. You can tend to see lots of things that are not actually there, known as " Pareidolia".

Ooops! Sorry, I wasn't really asking-- just commenting on how something could have possibly been mistaken for a "4 over S". I like trying to figure stuff out on my own, but if I were to post a question on a coin, you can rest assured it wouldn't be this coin (I have bigger fish to fry) and I'd include a lot more detail/pictures. Thanks so much for taking the time and looking at it. You folks are great and I appreciate your knowledge and how quickly you respond to peoples queries!

To CCF PropofGalloway! I agree that your coin is showing PMD.
Errers and Varietys.
