methylene chloride, toluene, tetrahydrofuran, cellusolve and methyl ethyl ketone

The Lucite it is an acrylic polimer. Before try others I will go with acetone. I has an 20$ gold on Lucite and I took out and I has now in MS 66. Took little more then one month in acetone but was worth.

Here's a solution. Send it to me, I'll pay full postage plus fifty cents. Then I'll post a video of me throwing this stupid thing into Lake Michigan.

Seriious offer, I am not kidding.

@ Coinfrog : I will put my self in the mail. You receive me and please drop me in your backyard not in cold water plese. I know my experiments can blow up your house but will be for a nobel cause of science. We had a deal?

@ Make: Could be fuzzy now, but maybe the clouds will dispersed.

Ya it will be fun,no high value coins will be hurt just commons,I'll take pictures as I go but won't post any failures, just if I can get it correctly,I have 5 coins in Lucite and will try a few things.

Coinfrog and everyone - He already knows its not a valuable coin and says he has 5 coins in lucite so thats why I suggested to go ahead and try the freeze and hammer method which works right away but can be messy. Yes the acetone can work but silviosi even just confirmed as I thought that it would take awihle, not like those acrylic nails. A month! It is good to know sometimes by others what works and what doesn't, so those like dearborn don't further blow themselves up later experimenting like beaker above

My first try wil be to remove most of the Lucite with a hacksaw as close to the coin as I can I'll be able to see through and where I'm cutting then around the outside diameter of the edge till just a bit away, then soak it and see if it will split in 2,maybe leave the bottom half a bit thick so I can put it in a vise,I'll try a few thing I have a bunch of cheap penny ones here to experiment with.

When you start sawing it will melt from the heat and gum up the blade into a gooey mess. Acetone does nothing to acrylic.

I've thought about your 1983 Kennedy half dollar w/lucite problem. I see what you're looking at, in front of John's mouth (small die chip). I have a 2023-P Bessie Coleman .25 piece I thought had a large Cud on her left cheek. I found out otherwise. Usually, Cuds are found around the rims of coins. The die crack, on my coin, may have exuded base metal from below, forming this error. The 10 ton squeeze, during the minting process, causes the metal or clad layers, to be " molten " immediately upon being struck. As for the "Lucite", I came up with a " Freeze solution ". When most anything freezes, it expands. Freeze the block of lucite for 1-2 days. Then place the lucite block, w/coin, on a hard surface and use a hammer, very carefully. A short crisp rap around the edge should shatter the Lucite. After it shatters and leaves the coin free of permanent encapsulation, you can then determine how to proceed from there. Remember, the metals used in your coin expand and contract as well. Take care !

This is just a theory based on Physics and should not be thought of as a tried and true method.

@ SilverSeeker69: Me personally I will opt for Nitrogen freeze and the cold 5 to max 10 deg water. Nitrogen pressure can is chip at auto parts store, and will broke molecular structure. Freezing work but can hurt also.

I will try the freeze first then cool,I will wrap it in a rag first though so stuff does not fly all over the place, maybe leave a hole in the top to whack it though.
