Are there counterfeit silver certificates? Almost certainly such things exist. Back when silver certificates were used as money, people would have tried counterfeiting them. And I suppose more valuable varieties would be counterfeited in more modern times, to try to fool collectors.
Are there counterfeit silver certificates in genuine PCGS Currency slabs? Almost certainly not. PCGS is a reputable slabber with considerable expertise; very very few fake notes would slip through their system.
Are there counterfeit silver certificates in counterfeit PCGS Currency slabs? I have not heard of such things being made before, but they make fake coin slabs, so fake banknote slabs are not technically impossible.
If your mother was buying these silver certificates from magazine-advertising coin marketing companies, then she probably overpaid, but they are probably genuine.

sooo when I go to that website, it asks for a serial number. If you notice, there isn't a serial number in the picture. However, the label says PCGS currency.... isn't that the same as PCGS banknote? or is currency and banknote different? different divisions maybe?

I found this.... "Looking for PCGS Currency? Collectors Universe, Inc., parent company of PCGS, operated PCGS Currency from 2005 until 2009 when it sold the banknote grading division to another company and licensed the trademark and brand name for 10 years until January, 2019 when the name and license returned to Collectors Universe. Therefore, notes graded under the PCGS Currency brand are graded as crossovers to ensure they meet the standards of the new PCGS Banknote grading service. We are unable to verify PCGS Currency holders." Does this mean this silver certificate was graded during this time period? There is a barcode and number on the back of the packaging and when I put this number in, up came a coin... not a banknote.  |

PCGS has changed their formatting for their banknote slabs several times. For this older series of slabs, I believe the certification number should be on the back of the slab.

And yes, that's the number. But if PCGS say they can't verify these older slabs, then you can't enter that number. They seem to expect you to re-submit them for re-slabbing under the new company.

I'm seeing something on the right side of the front of the note and hoping whatever it is, is on the outside of the holder and not the note.

The note in the PCGSC holder looks real to me. Not "rare" but still very collectible and worth a lot more than face value!

Can mnknight77 answer SteveinTampa question? I wouldn't think a note could receive a PPQ with that. But the foreign substance stops at the edge of the note.

I apologize... these emails started going to my spam folder for some reason... And I didn't know there were any other responses...
SteveinTampa ... that is actually the plastic itself... Something heavy was placed on top and actually 'scratched' the plastic.
By the way, We lived in Tampa for 10 years during the 90's. We were Airforce down at McDill. Miss Busch Garden afternoon trips with the kiddos to play in the water and Ybor City food! Live in NC now... can't find a decent Cuban sandwich here!!! :)

The crap/scratches/stuff on the right side of the holder almost looks like tape residue, dirt or spilled and dried soda pop (or glue of some sort). I don't think it's on the note. You can try to remove whatever it is by using a cotton swab with a little bit of alcohol on the tip and then gently rubbing the affected area of the holder with the alcohol dampened cotton swab. Don't over do it.
