The "knob ear" is fairly common (R1) and not usually attributed unless the submitter requests variety attribution. Since this is an EDS coin, the seller may not have noticed; or may have but did not want to spend the extra $15 or whatever it is now per coin for variety check.

PCGS slabs these as "Knob On Ear" on the holder.

The variety is interesting and makes for a good starting point for learning about the progression of die states, but it only adds a very modest premium to the value of the coin - the condition of the coin itself is a much stronger determinant of its value.

Looks like an AU-53 straight grade. Looks like PCGS missed the Knob Ear. Nice find on your part!

A lot of you were right on this one. I think this is fairly graded. Paralyse, you're right about the R1 rarity of this variety, but I think there is a decided premium for it. Price list pictures is from the NGC & PCGS values sites. NGC values are outdated, but show the relative value, I think. PCGS values are more recent.

The premium tends to favor MDS and later die states where the "knob" is more prominent. (I suppose "modest" is relative, yes?)

Regardless, it's a nice bit of copper and a good cherrypick. It would be worth a reslab with variety attribution, if you so desire, and you'd probably come out ahead on the deal.

I don't put much weight into price guides and prefer to look at auction data. It's more reliable and a much better "finger on the pulse" of the market provided that a given coin is sufficiently popular as to be frequently seen at auction. A large part of my rationale is that a grade (e.g. AU53) can cover a wide spectrum of coins, from the ugliest of the ugly to the best of the best, so looking at images of actual examples that have sold is more valuable to me than a strict numeric TPG grade.

Yeah, I don't disagree. I was scrolling around ebay with a search for slant 55 knob ears. Some pretty crappy coins asking big money, not that they'll get it. Felt pretty good with a PCGS slabbed example, although EDS.

Coin arrived today. I'm pleased. The seller's pictures showed the coin to poor advantage. Nicer in hand.

Agreed, panzaldi, but how often do we see a coin and say "What a beauty (if it only weren't for that scratch, rim ding or cheek mark).

UPDATE: I went to the ANA show in Atlanta last weekend and took the coin into the PCGS booth. Since, according to their own listings, Knob Ear is a distinct separate listed variety and not a sub-variety the rep called it a "mechanical error" in grading and attribution. She took the coin in for resubmission and, if they agree it's a Knob Ear variety, they will reslab it as such at no cost to me other than return shipping. Will report. Fingers crossed, although I'm certain it's a Knob Ear.

Just got notification from PCGS. They admitted their error and are reslabbing it as an 1855 Knob Ear AU53. No charge to me - even return shipping is free.
